Good Apartments Overall

We have lived here for several years, and I have to say that if you're looking for the perfect place to live, well, it doesn't exist. But, I do recommend Huntington Gateway as a good place to start. We actually chose HG based on a whirlwind tour and not knowing anything about the area when we moved up here, but it has served us well.
First, the good stuff: The office staff is generally very helpful, and the concierge folks are friendly. Just like anything else, you get what you give, be nice and respectful and they'll take care of you. The apartments are close to the Metro and Old Town, and the shuttle bus driver is a complete gem, one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet. Most of the people renting here are pretty nice and while folks are busy during the week, they're generally friendly.
The amenities are nice, I know at one point they were having issues with the A/C in the gym but that may be fixed now. They keep things looking beautiful as far as landscaping goes, and we've not had problems with having overnight guests. They just have to register to get a parking tag at the front desk. Maintenance is usually pretty quick to respond to issues, depending on what they have going on, and in the three years we've been here we've gotten a new stove, dishwasher, refrigerator, and washer. We are in building 2 and still don't have the remodeled kitchen with new countertops, but overall the kitchen isn't bad and everything works. We've not had any problems with bugs or pests. Last year they remodeled the hallways and lobbys of the apartments with new carpeting/paint/lighting, it looks very modern and up-to-date now. Depending on which direction your apartment windows are facing, you might get a (distant) view of the Capital building, the Washington monument, and fireworks from sporting events in DC.
Of course, no apartment is perfect. Depending on your neighbors you might hear perfect silence or lots of noise, but it never got so bad that we had to get the office involved. Expect to hear emergency vehicle sirens pretty much every night going up and down Huntington Avenue and Route 1. There are occasional false alarms as far as people setting off the fire alarms and having everyone get out of the building late at night or in the wee hours of the morning, and from what I understand the elevator key is left off-site so it can take a while to get the elevators going again after a false alarm. The elevators in building 2 smell like wet dogs at times for no good reason, and for several months there were times when 1 or 2 of the 3 elevators would just stop working, which was a pain in the rear when you had a load of groceries to bring up. Parking is very adequate, but don't expect to get a close parking space if you're pulling in late at night, that's common sense. The in-unit washers/dryers are the small stackable machines, so you can't do a full load of laundry in them, which is a pain but it's better than going to the laundromat.
All that said, you can run into those kind of issues anywhere that you rent, it's just part of apartment living. If you're looking for convenience to Old Town and DC, with a responsive staff and a clean/safe environment, Huntington Gateway is definitely a good place to check out.
