We moved here from out of state and had no opportunity to view apartments or neighborhoods before moving in. When we got here, we were shocked. What we saw on the website does not even remotely resemble the actual condition of the apartment! It is old and disgusting, complete with roaches and mold. We've also had a number of serious problems in the three months we've been here. Among them:
1. We drove 1,500 miles to get here on the move-in date only to find that not only would we not be moving in to the apartment we had been assigned and where I was already having things mailed to, but the apartment we would be moving into was not even close to being ready. No one even bothered to call us.
2. It was 15 degrees outside when we moved in and the heat was broken. It was so cold we had to spend the night in the kitchen with the stove on. I alerted management immediately and they proceded to do nothing. I called the 24 hour so-called emergency maintance line repeatedly over the next several weeks, but was responded to in a timely manner only once. In the end, it took ONE MONTH for our heat to get fixed, and it was only when I threatened to withhold rent that they actually called the contractors out to replace the unit. During that month (December) it was FREEZING.
3. We frequently have only lukewarm water, which management claims to know nothing about.
4. We are charged MORE THAN 100 DOLLARS A MONTH for utilities such as trash and sewer from the management. The bill includes about $40 for gas, even though we pay about $80 a month to Washington Gas. It's absolute extortion.
Overall, I HATE the apartment and feel that everything I was told prior to moving in was a lie. I want to break the lease and move out, but am afraid of damaging my credit.
Also, public transportation in this area is a joke. The bus goes to the metro once an hour, and it can easily take an hour and a half and involve many transfers to get somewhere that takes 10 or 15 minutes by car.
