I moved to Mason Hall about a year ago. I would say that for apartment housing, it is a pretty average place to live. Here are some pros: nice location (about a mile from old town Alexandria), the grounds look very nice from the outside, my view is beautiful(I live on the back side of the building), it is pretty quiet most of the time, friendly residents, feels safe, utilities are included, and the management seems to respond to most problems (the ones that are immediate). The cons that I've experienced: the rent is pretty pricey for a studio I think, there is no W/D in the apartment and they recently raised the price for the machines in the basement because they replaced them with new ones, the elevators sometimes don't work, I have had at least 2 roaches that were fairly large, the hallways are dark and smell in the summer (it's embarrassing to have guests because they notice the smell right away-I think it smells because there is little ventilation and the trash rooms are in the halls), and the metro is a little far for walking especially at night. Overall, I would recommend this building to someone who wants to live in/near old town Alexandria, but can't afford something more expensive and who does not need to live very close to a metro station.

Good news is the big roaches are usually waterbugs. It's the ones that are only about 1/4 inch called the German Roach that you will have BIG problems with because they multiply quickly - get some Roach Proof (boric acid powder) from Kmart $3 bottle - sprinkle extremely lightly - you'll never see another roach and it's safe same stuff they put in your eyes for an infection.
