Excellent--but be aware

I've lived in the Phase II building for nearly a year now, and, on the whole, I love it. As some other reviewers have said, I rarely if ever hear my neighbors (and I hope they rarely hear me in return). Maintenance is prompt and courteous. I haven't had many problems, but, during one plumbing disaster, they not only fixed the problem ASAP but sent up housekeeping to mop up the floor, etc., afterward. Metro accessibility is fantastic, and, with a few minor exceptions, the office staff are friendly and courteous and seem to have learned my name quickly in this large building. I get first-name treatment from most of them, and I appreciate that. What people have said about the temperature variation resulting from the sunroom is more or less accurate, but, regardless, I haven't found my heating bill to be atypical or markedly different than anyplace else I've lived. All told, the Meridian is the nicest, quietest place I've ever lived. Also, absolutely no bugs or other vermin of any sort.
There are a few things to be aware of, however. Some here have already talked about the fact that the apartment is located in the midst of public housing projects. Some have noted this as a point of safety awareness, and others, in response, have said that they've never had any problems, that the cops are always out there, etc. Well, I got held up at gunpoint by two guys hiding behind one of the pillars surrounding the fountain on the outdoor plaza between the back of the building & the metro station. They shoved a pistol in my face and ran off with my wallet directly into the projects. No cop in sight, other pedestrians a mere 50 or so yards behind me. I still have to walk through that plaza every night, and I'll never feel safe doing so again (note also that I am a fairly large guy, over 6' tall; they didn't care). When the cops came to investigate, they admitted that this had happened before. I don't care what that plaza looks like, it is NOT safe. Meridian management will make no effort to point this out to you when you are viewing your apartment or signing your lease! I grew up poor & have frequently lived in dodgy neighborhoods throughout my life, in DC, Detroit, Chicago, and elsewhere, but I had to move to Alexandria & the Meridian Apts. to have a gun shoved in my face.
Also, despite what I said about the high quality of the staff, they have a consistent problem notifying you of delivered packages in a prompt manner. I have, in the months that I've been here, had to argue with the concierge on at least 3 occasions to get him/her to locate a package that I *knew* had been delivered but for which they had not bothered or had forgotten to attach a notification slip to my mailbox. In general--and I assume this is part of the problem--mail is delivered very late, sometimes at 6 pm or later.
But, all that said, the silence in my apartment when I come home after working a long day is pure gold to me, and I remain satisfied.
