I lived here in 2005 and 2006, so my comments are a bit dated, but thougt I'd add my 2 cents. On whole, living at Meridian was okay, but wasn't thrilled with it, expecially for the price. The building made a great first impression, which is why I rented there. But quickly after move in, the luster faded and problems surfaced. Having lived in the area for awhile, I'd say there are better properties, but this still ranks in top 10 in Alexandria. It's regarded by many as one of the better apartment buildings in Alexandia, but if you have time to explore other options, then look around at some of the newer nearby properties.
Pros:
Very convenient to King St. metro, and Whole Foods is right next door. Enjoyed having a pool and work out room. Was convenient having the guest suite available - cheaper per night than nearby hotels - but honestly was a bit of a hassle to book. Having a washer/dryer in unit was a huge plus. Storage/closet space was good: Building offered extra storage for a fee, but I didn't use it, so no comment on that. Bedrooms had decent walk in closets. Entry had a coat closet. And guest bath (though oddly not the master bath) had a built in linen clost. Garage parking was another big plus, but as with everything else at Meridian, there's a fee. Maintenance staff and concerierge were pleasant and responsive. Never really dealt with office staff until move out, which turned out to be a nightmare - more on that below. Always felt safe, and never heard of any break ins in the units or parking garage. Also, never noticed any problems with pests or vermin in the unit or in the common areas. And in fairness to the property, despite the "cons" listed below, I know that several of my neighbors were very happy living there and would have recommended it to others.
Cons:
I lived on the 15th floor in a 2 brm/2 ba with the floor to ceiling windows - heating and cooling were a nightmare and my utilities were outrageous b/c of poor insulation in the units. In winter, the drafts from windows would rattle the verticle blinds and kept the place quite chilly. And in summer, it was like a sauna. Also, many nearby properties include some utilities in the rent- Meridian does not. You have to pay water, electric, cable, etc. In my apt, the water pipes and HVAC ducts seemed to be laid out inefficiently - never seemed to have great hot water in the shower, even though maintenance turned up the water heater to its highest setting. And was nearly impossible to maintain a comfortable temperature in the unit, particularly in the bedroom. Water fixtures seemed to perpetually drip or leak - under kitchen sink, toilet in master bath, sink and bath faucets. Maintenance came several times to try to fix the drips and never seemd to get the problem resolved. Even though the building was fairly new, carpets were thin and worn - definitely cheap carpet and carpet pad. Had a fair amount of noise from neighbors - could hear neighbor snoring at night. Move out was a nightmare, and Irina was most unpleasant to deal with. Office supposedly never got my lease renewal/termination paperwork and charged me horrible fees. And sorting out the utilities billing after my move out was a mess - the property wouldn't release my name from the utilities until the month following my move out and I incurred billing for utilities racked up after I moved out. I've never experienced this anywhere else that I've lived. For both my move in and move out, the office had double booked the loading dock and freight elevator. For my move in I got stuck with extra charges by my movers for having to haul my stuff in from the street, since they didn't have access to the loading dock. With parking, utilities, pet rent, etc, I paid over $2,000 per month for a 2brm 2 bath. For the money, I expected better.
