Move here if you love noise

I have one complaint about living here but it is major: constant noise.

First, there have been men working on the outside of the buildings on and off for the last six months. For about the last six weeks, they have even been working on Saturdays. I wake up to clanging ladders, men shouting in the parking lot and air compressors starting up. All this is followed by relentless banging.

Second, some of the tenants in my building act like students. It is not uncommon to hear girls shrieking as they pound up the stairs with a case of beer at 1am. My upstairs neighbors are young men who sound as if they're playing football in their apartment. They pound on the floor so hard that my dishes rattle and my light fixture flickers, sometimes till well after midnight. I feel like I'll never get a good night's sleep here again. Ear plugs and a white noise machine do little to mask the sounds. The floors are the flimsiest plywood and seem designed to amplify sound rather than muffle it.

I have lived in cheaper apartments which were uglier and probably less safe, but they were a lot less noisy than this one. I don't need a security gate for peace of mind, but I do need some quiet.

My major complaint aside, this is an okay place to live. Parking in the southern part of the complex is adequate. Some members of the staff are great and some have a bit of an attitude but that's about the best you can hope for in apartment management. The apartments look and smell better than most of the older apartments in the area. I have some benign bugs in the summer but no rodents. In spite of the wreck that is the trash disposal area, I've never seen a rat there. The grounds are kept clean and the new paint on the buildings does make the place look fresh (though why they chose such a mucosal yellow, I'll never know).

If you want to move here, I would recommend waiting until all the buildings are painted, and get a top-floor unit. Then you can be the one your downstairs neighbors complain about for "walking too much," but at least you will sleep soundly at night. And once you go to sleep, your neighbors can sleep, too.
