Glad to be gone

Years at this apartment: 2001 - 2006
I moved from this dump last year in August and couldn't be happier. This was a nice building when I first moved there in 2001, but it's been in rapid decline since then. Although the building went to pot, I made a heap of money when I sold my condo. Why that new owner paid what she did to live there is beyond me, but I was happy so long as I was able to get the hell out of there.
The major problems with this place are roaches, slow maintenance, incompetent management, roaches and overcrowding. I lived on the same floor as some pig whose apartment was so filthy that it had to be declared unsafe! That apartment was the source of many of the roaches. Extermination is not mandatory, and when I bought my place the management could find no record of the unit having been treated in five years. The other problem is that the extermination days were frequently changed with no notice. So you might be thinking that you could call and have it scheduled for the first Friday of the month only to find out that the service had been changed to the first Wednesday of that month. When that happens, you'll either have to wait another month for the exterminator or hire someone on your own.
The board did approve some much-needed renovations for the elevators, but the building's exterior could use some work.
Noise was always a problem for me and there was never any resolution of my complaints. I called the front desk, called security, called the manager, wrote letters and got little in return. The inconsiderate people continue to be noisy because they know that there are no consequences. And let me tell you, it sucks to be wakened from a sound sleep at 7:00 a.m. on the weekend by someone's stereo -- loud obnoxious techno or some other percussion-fueled garbage. The constant noise was a quality of life issue and contributed to a lot of my unhappiness there. I've lived in apartments before and I understand that you are going to hear the occasional noise, but I was dealing with constant, excessive noise and no one did anything about it. And that was unacceptable to me.
Another problem is that there is/was a high rate of turnover with the office staff. We went through three managers while I was there before the current person was hired. So there is little consistency and accountability. And good luck sitting through one of those ridiculous condo board meetings.
