Expensive But Nice

A good place to live overall, but expensive even for a high cost of living area.
The good. The apartment complex is only about two years old. The apartments seem to be well insulated from noise. The office staff is very professional, well trained and courteous. My few maintenance request have been handled in a very timely manner and where fixed the first time. The building and grounds are well maintained. The location is great, only two blocks from Whole Foods, four blocks from the King Street Metro Station, six blocks from Hoffman Movie Theaters complex and only a short walk to businesses in Old Town Alexandria. The health club is small but has a good number of treadmills, elliptical machines and Stair Steppers along with a basic compliment of resistance machines and free waits. For those who like to job there are a combination of wide sidewalks and paved bike/walking paths along Eisenhower avenue that allow you to jog all the way down to Van Dorn Street which is about 3-4 miles away. The underground parking garage is spacious and there are plenty of parking spaces. There is a freight elevator available for moving large items. My apartment has a stacked typed washer and dryer. Good neighborhood in terms of low crime.
The bad. As I first mentioned the rent is very high, I would say the apartments are overpriced by a good 30%. There also is a $300 association fee that you have to pay every 12 months, evidently your rent isn t enough to pay for whatever the association fee money goes toward Then last summer they put out this notice that you needed a pass to use the pool and that if you had more than one guest you had to pay extra for them to use the pool. Also for some reason they have a lifeguard on duty whenever the pool is open which only open during certain hours and only during the summer and weekends in the fall. I think the DC area stays warm enough the majority of the year that the pool could be open year round.
Although not advertised as luxury apartments, I expected more upscale and quality hardware and appliances. The kitchen faucet is just a standard facet with no spray nozzle and my refrigerator isn t full size, it s only about the size of a standard refrigerator. The bathroom is just a plain tub with plain medium quality fixtures, single vanity with standard fixtures, the towel racks are just made of cheap plastic, plus there is no linen storage cabinet in the bathroom. The apartments just have the basic tan colored carpeting the 95% of apartments have and the paint on the walls is cheap and will smear if you try to wipe a smug off them. Storage space is very limited in terms of utility closets.
The apartments have small balconies but for whatever reason the are not deep enough to even stand out on. They are only maybe eighth inches deep. As someone else mentioned there is no parking for guests, they have to either park on the metered street or supposedly use one of the nearby parking garages but as far as I know the garages are not public garages. Something is wrong with the buildings plumbing. They are always having people come out to work on the buildings plumbing. I have noticed that my bathroom sink drains very slowly now compared to when I moved in. I also don t see the benefit of paying someone to man the front concierge desk overnight. The apartment doors also don t have a secondary lock on them that prevents say maintenance people coming in while you are home. They also wasted money last year re-doing the sidewalk at the entrance which made zero sense and then just recently this year they spent money to retile the hallway between the mailboxes and health club which seemed to be in perfect condition since the building is at the most two years old.
Even though I complained about more things then I praised, I would still highly recommend the complex. My main complaint is the price which is just to high for a complex built with standard off the shelf apartment materials that you would find in 80% of apartments.
