Doing time by renting online
From: -Anonymous-Date posted: 2/23/2002
Years at this apartment: 2001 - 2002
I made the terrible mistake of renting my apartment a Potomac Club (who is changing their name to Meridan at Braddock Station) on line from somewhere else. The woman who rented to me is very dishonest and extremely deceptive in her renting practices. We were told over the phone that we would be getting a one year lease. Instead we signed what every other apartment community calls a 13 month lease. We thought our last month was a prorated timeframe period just like every other apartment community we lived in before (in four other states). We were very suprised that this is not the case. This is partly our fault for not reading the fine print. The last few weeks are set in stone and the management company has been very rude and unforgiving on this issue. Where ever you go, read every single line twice and DO NOT let some bubbly person with a big, fake smile try to rush you. The first manager at this property was shockingly hostile and rude. She has been promoted and replaced with a much more friendly manager. The assistant mangager is wonderful and is the only shing star at this rental community. He has gone out of his way to be great, kind, and helpful. The woman who rented to us is very fake and a typical sales person. She will twist information and be very untruthful. I would insist on dealing only with the manager or assistant manager if you decide to rent at this property.
The noise in the building is HORRIBLE! I can hear my neighbor's go to the bathroom and snore. The floor plans are very unthoughtful for people who like to sleep. Our bedroom backs up to a neighbors living room. You could here them have violent domestic episodes and attack their pets as though it were on top of your bed. You can also hear any TV or stereo noise no matter how low the neighbors turn down their equipment. It is just awful to try and get any quiet rest. If your neighbor is a night owl or for that matter, even breathes, you will definitely hear it clearly. You will know more about your neighbors than you ever dreamed because their conversations will come through your wall crystal clear. The carpeting and general state of our apartment when we moved in was disgusting. The previous resident smoked and we had a ring of nicotine stains (and smell) on the edge of every rug. The rugs were faded, damaged and basically gross. The cabinets are made of those lousy "euro front" beige with a wood strip handle. Ours came stained, cracked, and peeling, Our floors are equally gross and cheap. Their is nothing "luxury" about these apartments. Potomac Club also seems to move in lots of party people. If you like this, this is your place. If you don't like noisy, druken college students, avoid this place. There are a number of people around us who have been extremely rude with their noise levels and have no respect with their neighbors. The management says they are proactive about noise when they get complaints. The building has been under constant improvement as they are building phaseII. They have spent a lot of money redoing the lobby and putting new carpeting in everyones unit except ours. If you want new carpeting, insist on it. They also redid the top floor apartments hallway's and paint before anyone elses. The have not put anymore sound insulation in between the units. I have watched the new tower being built and it does not look to build any better than ours. It will be more expensive however. The work out room is nice and they are expanding it. I don't know if the hours will be extended though. The fitness center only stays open until 10PM because of the noise. The pool is not as nice as it looks in pictures. It is small and shallow and their always seems to be noisy and rude children in it. The glass balconies are definitely a nice touch. It gives an other wised cramped floor plan a nice amount of space. The closet space is great too. The parking garage is very secure. The building says it is but there have been many lapses and their is no security guard. This is a bit disturbing because, while the ads say old town, this buiding is in nothern old town and is bordered by some unsightly public housing. I won't walk at night though this area. It is being redeveloped slowly but children have snuck into the building on different occasions and vandalized the place. The best feature of this place is it's very easy to the METRO. It is 5 minute walk, less thana quarter of a mile. That is the reason we moved here. The staff for doing repairs is not very good. They don't even know how to fix blinds or install them right. It took them several months to get stuff done on occasion and they are generally not very nice and not very good. In fact, some them are extremely rude. The staff also routinely shows up at the door with no advanced notice and then does not even give you a chance to answer your door before the barge in. Sometimes they don't even knock. They will then lie and say they did when it is a fact that they didn't. I thought maybe I just didn't hear one time but then I was right by the door out of sight another time when they came right in with no warning. This is a terrible invasion of privacy and a lack of respect for the people living there. I actually had one staff member recently show up at my door with a prospective renter with no advanced warning while I was still in my underwear, she showed the apartment in a complete mess because I was doing laundry. This should be a warning sign as to how they will treat you when you live there. All in all, the staff is fake nice enough but this company is all about making money no matter what in my opinion. That was what did it for me. Once you are signed in, they don't treat you very well. I would think long and hard before I would sign a long term lease here. They charge more for a 6 month but that would be a better amount of time to see if you can stand it here. Make sure you know exactly how long the lease is and don't assume they do business like anyone else you may have been used to. The lack of decent sound proofing and the lack of true integrity and honesty are why I am moving out of Potomac Club. I have done my time for renting online and I have learned a lot about what to look for. I won't be fooled again and I hope no one else gets fooled like I did at what I like to call "The facade of Luxury, Potomac Club at Braddock Station"
