Housing is extremely expensive in the DC metro area which is why we moved to PG, although it was still high it was doable. From the time we moved in we kept trying to convince ourselves "It's not that bad". First of all, It smells horrible. We could not cover the smell with air freshners or fabreze. The hallways would gag me. There is no end to the mice. You can set traps forever and they will still come. No matter how clean you keep everything. The same goes true for the cockroaches. We used raid, bait traps. even after the apartment was fumigated, they were still there. It's a never ending battle and they are winning. Outside there are huge rats and they rule the garbage dumpster. Take care when taking out your trash! The apartments are not secure. I easily broke into our own apartment when I locked my keys out. Fortunately nobody broke in while we were living there, but the windows show that they had been broken in multiple times. We have never felt secure in the building. You may feel safe since the police are there all the time arresting people, making drug busts etc. But there is a reason they are always there. One time as we were walking to our apt. a police officer stopped us asked us why we lived here and told us to be very careful. Do you think he knew something' There is constant latin bass pumping, parties at all hours. My poor wife gets hisses and whistles and cat calls every time she is outside. I was always afraid for her safety. Two ice-cream trucks literally circle the complex all day long playing loud high pitched "la cukaracha" music with a ringing bell. Don't even think about trying to take a nap in the daytime. Spanish-speaking salepeople will come at least a couple times a week and your door will be posted with spanish advertisements daily. The utilities and electrical bills are outrageous and we were misled on this piece of info before we moved in. We were very conservative and would still pay up to $150/month in utilities. Your rent will also constantly go up. Make sure you read the 29 pages of fine print in the lease because they will get you on everything! Oh, and the laundry machines are no good. Everyone goes to the nearby (expensive) laundrymat. The streets are constantly being blocked by people talking to their friend and picking up people. The good thing for us was there was plenty of space. Though it was sloppily painted (there are dead cockraoches visable under the cheap paint). It is in a great location. We got in on a new years special for $772 as soon as our lease was up the price went to $1110 and I hear that is typical. We appreciated the low price but there are nicer apartments out there for close to the same price. We are so happy to be leaving.
