After four months...

Moving from out of state to NVA was a real shocker, not only in terms of the cost of rental housing, but also in regards to the filth so many people are willing to live with and accept as ordinary. I looked at so many apartments that were utterly disgusting, and when I said as much to the leasing agent, "oh, I don't agree with you" was the most common statement in response. I guess they thought I was deaf, dumb and blind, or perhaps even worse, desperate. Virginians, you really do not have to take the abuse so many lessors want you to accept as commonplace. THINK, PLAN and say NO! And write your state Congress person and complain about the predatory Real Estate rental practices.
The Reserve at Eisenhower was a reprieve, of sorts. The apartments I looked at were clean, with appliances I was accustomed to as a home owner. The condition of the apartments I looked at were superior to everything I saw in the Kingstowne area. The facility is well kept, and of the one maintenance request I had, David showed up promptly when scheduled. I am a savvy home owner, however, I have to give him credit for solving the problem that I did not concur with in the beginning.
The front office staff has always been nice and has always acted with courtesy. Of those residents that say otherwise, I can only imagine the attitude they started out with... Karen, Paul, John, Ray and David, treat them nice and they'll treat you nice. And yes, they will go out of their way to accommodate your needs. Ask and you'll receive as its the fool that makes demands, especially unreasonable demands.
Downside to this place is the cost. A one bedroom loft at $1800 per month is a lot of money. Yeah, you can equalize/justify the majority of the cost, but its my best guess that I'm paying a $300 premium for the unit. Other costs (pets, extra parking, extra storage) exceed convenience pricing. Sixty days notice to vacate is unreasonable.
The rumor of this place going condo is slightly misplaced... Down the street about a block, they are going condo. Where fools rush in... a pricey ticket to become a condo owner and a pricey maintenance fee on top of that. Ouch!
Have to agree, there are idiots drivers who are just plain stupid when they drive in the garage. I guess they think I can magically drive through concrete. Never ceases to amaze me. The parking structure is tight, not only in driving, but also in parking space if you have a large SUV/truck. But so is every other place. If you have a large vehicle, you'll have to be careful.
What else... Comcast digital cable TV and cable modem internet access. You can also get DSL from Verizon without the need to have a DSL modem. Yeah, I wrote that correctly. Just plug the ethernet cable into the wall socket and go (assuming you've talked to Verizon). DSL is cheaper than cable modem. Gas stove and full size washer, dryer, refrigerator. Elevator access for the units in the back and parking level access to/from apartment floor.
For me, noise is not a problem. I cannot even hear the trains, which run behind the parking structure.
There are worse places to live. Extraordinarily worse places to live in Alexandria, VA.
