I ve lived in South Port for almost a month now. Maybe I m still in the "honeymoon phase" but I think it s a decent place. I live near the front, so that helps -- I don t think I d want to live further back.
The apartment is big; I have a walk-in closet in the master bedroom, and the living room is big enough to hold my huge couch and three chairs, as well as a large shelving unit and a few tables. There was new carpeting when we moved in. I m not thrilled with the paint job (I m pretty sure there wasn t one), but it s not appalling by any means. The appliances are old, and I have to prewash anything I put in the dishwasher, but it s not a huge issue. I have seen a few bugs (I m a Northern girl so big bugs still freak me out) but no roaches and it s not an infestation by any means.
I haven t had any problems with parking -- there are always spaces right in front of my building entrance. I have seen security patrols, so I don t know what that says about the safety of your vehicle.
There s a bus stop (metro bus and DASH, and I think the Fairfax connector too) right at the entrance to the complex, and it s only a few minutes ride to the Van Dorn Street Metro. Be aware, though, that it still takes close to an hour to get to downtown DC, so if you re a DC commuter, you might want to keep that in mind. Parking at Van Dorn Street Metro is IMPOSSIBLE after about 7:15 AM (and that s a generous estimate).
Overall -- decent apartment for a decent price.
