This is a good place for kids and dogs. The grounds are grassy and well kept up and you can walk your dog all over, not just in a small area. The kids have lots of playmates and there's a playground and pool. The school bus stops at the community entrance.

The apartments are okay but the north-facing ones are DARK! I moved to the other side of my building and I'm much happier now. The buildings are old so don't expect luxurious fittings but they do try to keep things up. The dishwasher in my first place got even crusty dishes clean but my current one stinks. They control the heat and A/C which means we have a few weeks of neither in the Spring and Fall so you have to keep your windows open during prime allergy seasons - and there are lots of trees around here dumping pollen!

Apartments are garden style so your experience depends on who happens to rent the other 8-12 apartments in your building. Mostly they're nice people but there are some trashy types, and they like to hang out in the parking lot & sidewalks so you have to walk past them to get to your apartment. I used to live in Texas and I've seen this before - -------- don't go to bars, they use their pick-up trucks as bar counters and hang out in the parking lot, but they're harmless. It just looks trashy. My neighbors are very nice and they're quiet and I can't complain about them. People in this complex come from every corner of the planet and a lot keep to themselves rather than try to assimilate. But most say "hi" at least.

There were some very very bad problems with water main breakages in the winter of 2002/3 and they addressed it by overhauling the whole system. This was a big mess during the breaks and the overhaul, but they notified us as best they could and they tried to keep the water on during get-ready-for-work time. They could do more about drainage. The mosquitos are VERY BAD and the gutters empty into unhealthy concrete dish things and the ground gets very soggy. Look for dirt vs mud vs grass before renting on the ground floor.

Office staff varies b/c it's a big company. The regular woman who speaks Spanish can't be trusted to give you the right answer and she can be rude.

The head management changed recently and I'm not sure if it's for the better or not. They're trying to get control over the parking lot (there's been some crime). They seem to be desperate to rent right now so you can probably get a deal and negotiate for a bigger dog than the supposed 25-lb limit. There are lots of big dogs living here.

The other staff are nice and they care about doing their jobs. There doesn't seem to be much turnover in maintenance staff, which is really rare.

The office needs to improve its communication though. The plumber shows up for one minor problem in the kitchen not knowing there's a huge problem in the bathroom. Stuff like that.

Oh and about security... they can't be everywhere at once. If you call Alexandria PD to report something they tell you they're too busy and you should call our security staff instead. At least we have small buildings and secure entrances, and security staff to call but still... If you don't rent at South Port be sure to check out the PD's site for daily felony reports to see where the crime is, then be sure the complex you rent from has its own security staff.

"Livable?!" A cave is also "livable" – and cleaner and safer!

The reason that they overhauled their exterior plumbing is because they violated numerous codes; I know -- I used to call the code inspectors on them. And each time they turned the water off, it was off for at least 12 hours. At one point, I returned to my apartment on a Saturday evening, at approximately 8:30 p.m. I noticed water “bubbling” up from the parking lot. I called their after-hours maintenance to inform them of the watermain break. My wife and I knew what was coming next -- hours without water. We filled our bathtub and as many containers as we could find; it’s always nice to be able to have water to drink and cook, and also a nice benefit to be able to flush the toilet. Except this time, maintenance DID NOTHING to fix the problem. They did, however, turn the water off.

Sunday morning came; I went outside expecting to see vehicles and workers fixing the problem; still nothing. I called after-hours emergency maintenance again. A few hours later, I got a call from a maintenance guy. I informed him that I called this in “last night at 8:30,” to which he replied, “What do you want me to do?” I said “Get someone here to fix it.” He said “I made a phone call. There’s nothing more I can do.” I asked who he called. His response was “Well, I couldn’t call Miss Utility. There not there on weekends.” That lying sack of s**t.

I yelled “Of course they’re there on weekends. It’s set up for emergency digging.” I called code inspectors, Miss Utility and the water company myself.

South Port did not begin work until Tuesday morning. And the jerkoffs shut the water off all day, turned it back on for a few hours just as people got home from work, then shut it off again. I calculated that until the problem was fixed on Wednesday, we had collectively been without water for more than 72 hours! If these idiots actually did what they were supposed to, it would have been fixed by Sunday night!

South Port gets no praise; it’s a filthy dump, run by incompetent, rude morons. I hope they all burn in hell -- or better yet, I wish that they all had to live in one of the South Port ghetto apartments.
