I've been living at South Port for about 7 months now and so far it hasn't been too bad. Parking is adequate but it is true that if you have to park after 11 you may have to park a building or 2 away your own which means your walk will be increased by roughly 30 seconds. Also, there are quite a few people in the parking lot who just do not park well so if you have a new car you may want to try to park it in a space that is away from the busiest areas to avoid getting your car dinged, but if you want to complain about that, just park any where around that area in Alexandria and you will deal with the exact same problem and everyone who has parked at Shoppers food warehouse knows exactly what I am talking about however South Ports parking lot is no where as bad as Shoppers parking lot.. When it comes to noise (which is probably building specific) there is only one person in my building (who lives below me) that is occasionally noisy. They like to blast there bass to the point where I can hear it but I put up with it so when I play DDR (Yes DDR) or watch a movie with my home theater I won't feel bad when I unleashing the power. And just as an insurance policy I keep detailed records of when, how loud, and how long my neighbor plays music obnoxiously loud. And just to be considerate of all my other neighbors, I let them know that if I am ever being too loud (which is very rare) they can just come on over or give me a call, shoot me an IM and I'll gladly turn it down or they can join in on the fun! I did have to call south port one time about the noise when my neighbor woke me up at 6:30 with loud music (same one who lives below me). South Port supposedly took appropriate action and gave me a letter to document my complaint and it hasn't happened again. Most of the people in my building appear to be clean from what I can tell from their porches but I do see a roach probably once a month but I can tell you that it has gotten much better since they did the mandatory apartment inspection and spraying where they told everyone in the building that they'd come by and inspect their living conditions to better deal with the bug problem. One complaint I do have about the extermination process that they use is they spray instead of using bait. Now I do not know which way is better but I do not like the way the spray smells and that smell can linger for days. As for the maintenance, every time I have put in a request they would come that day or the very next and fix the problem on the first try. The one time it took a couple of tries was when I accidentally flushed some q-tips down the toilet but that was my fault and a little more difficult for them to fix but the problem was resolved the next day and that is what matters. When it comes to the construction the floors are a little creaky in some spots but I live on the top floor so it does not really affect me much, but I do try to walk lightly on my feet and avoid playing DDR with the mat sitting on a creaky area. Now for those who live on the second or first floor and unfortunately have one of those 500 pound walking 150 pound people (those people who are what I would consider healthy sized but walk like they weight 500 pounds) that may cause you to get annoyed with noise from above but that is probably the case from any apartment complex with older wood construction. The room with the washing machines is kept clean and I've only seen one of the machines break down once and it took about a week to fix. I have never witnessed a flood and the power has gone out twice, both times I was sleeping and I'm not sure how long it was out for, the only reason I knew it had gone out was my clocks were all reset. The grounds are kept clean. The main problem is the few tenants who spoil it for everyone and throw their trash on the ground. The staff has been really great so far besides on person whose name starts with an S. I try not to deal with her because she apparently has not been very helpful nor does she want to assist you if its 5:15 (office closes at 5:30). The rest of the staff is very nice and knowledge. But at the same time, I treat them with respect (even the ones who may not deserve it) and that really goes a long way. And that is the same for your neighbors, the only problem is when there is a language barrier and that may lead to problems due to miscommunication and cultural differences. All in all, South Port is a great place to live as long as you treat everyone you encounter in the same way that you would like to be treated, think before you become upset over a simple mistake and make sure to keep detailed records of anything that may be questionable and may lead to problems down the road. Take the comments on this site with a grain of salt and use them to help you take proper measures to make your living experience here or at any apartment complex a good experience. I expect that I may get some comment about this post slamming south port and telling me that I am unintelligent for living here and not slamming it as well, but so far, I have few complaints and most of them are complaints that you will find anywhere no matter how much you pay because as much as we all like to, you cannot control who lives around you in an apartment complex.
Update: 3/07/08
I have now been living in South Port for about a year in a half. My rent increased from 1195 to 1255 which I guess is reasonable due to the fact that all utilities are included. The same issues that I stated above are there. I have learned of a way to combat the Roaches. It appears they they come out of the sink as if they travel through the sewer system. I noticed a reduction when I made sure to plug the sink after every use. It may seem annoying to do but you get use to it very quickly. The only issue is the dishwasher. There is no way to plug that so, usually, that's where I find them so I make sure to run it every night and they keeps the bugs to a minimum. My loud neighbor moved out so it has been very quiet here lately. Parking has gotten a little more crowded but there is still always somewhere to park. The staff in the office has remained the same. They upgraded the washing machines (and upgraded the price). If any one has any questions, comments, please feel free to share.
