So here's the deal: The apartments themselves are very nice. They are spacious and quite inexpensive compared to others closer to the city, so if you can compromise the 30 minute drive in the morning into the city, its not bad. Maintenance can be a little faster, but if you complain about problems enough it will get done...eventually. They guarantee a 24 hour responce, but be warned, it doesnt happen unless you have an "emergency" - like a leaking fridge or your front door lock not working (both problems I had the day I moved in...so thats not saying much for a first impression).
However, Archstone does offer a 30 day guarantee that if you're not happy you can break the lease and I am using that and getting out quickly. Ive been frustrated with maintenance, but when I came home and saw MS13 gang graffiti all over the outside wall of my apartment building, it was time to say adios!(The leasing office also said this happened on other buildings, and several days later the building ajacent to mine was covered too.) From my knowledge, this is not a bunch of high school kids trying to be cool. This violent gang is serious business and all the surrounding county police depts have been trying to penetrate them for years (if you want more info, im sure if you call any PD in the area they'd be able to fill you in). And the only thing seprating you from the outside is the deadbolt on your door, because each individual garden-style building is not secure. And yes, now that their presence has been detected on the property, Fairfax County Police does regular rounds around the complex, but that doesnt make me feel much better. Does that sound like a place you want to live'

Ah, Hello! It's called the GHETTO! Walk out to Rt. 236 and take a look at the miscreants that are inhabiting that corridor! Would you expect anything less than HISPANIC gang activity? We need to take the area back! Contact your local INS office and complain!
