Unsafe Neighborhood

I have lived in this apartment complex for a little over 2 years and am now moving out. I honestly have not had much problem with parking, although I was towed once even though I had a sticker in my car window. This was under the previous management and seems to be an isolated event, but it still cost me $100. The guest parking situation is much worse and it is very difficult to have a guest over unless it is planned long in advance. There just aren't enough guest spots to go around. I have also seen the other apartments have much worse parking problems, I think I just got lucky with individual apartment placement for parking.
I also have had little trouble with noise, however I live on the top floor. The only noise I have heard is from people outside, which happens once a week or so. I did have one incident of a kid screaming outside my window at 2 am about his sister being murdered for an hour. I don't know the situation, but it was a very startling wake-up call and was what got me to start worrying about the safety of the area.
The grounds aren't bad and to me seem to be the best part of this neighborhood. The new management seems to really be stressing this so I figure it will stay this way.
Safety is the place where I have the most complaints. I had a Fairfax County Police Officer (who are always outside and around the complex) tell me that this neighborhood was the worst place to live in the county crime-wise. He also told me he wouldn't let his girlfriend walk around alone day or night in this complex. We have tags from at least 2 gangs, one being MS13, all over the buildings. Although I haven't experienced any crime first hand here, I have read the crime report (its bad) and have neighbors who have had break-ins in their cars and homes. I can't tell you not to live here, although I hated it, but please look at a crime report and drive through the apartment complex at night a few times before you bring your family to this place.
The construction is old but not bad and I have no complaints for this section.
The maintenance people have been horribly inadequate almost every time I've called them. Someone broke open my mailbox so it would no longer close and the maintenance "fixed" it three times and its still broken. I have a 10ft. crack in my ceiling that they refuse to fix. The "Hot Surface" light on my stove was broken when I moved in and they tried to fix it and finally said they can not. The water and air/heat gets cut off regularly and the last time the water went off mine came back dark green for a couple of hours. After that it smelled of oil/cleaner for weeks and I didn't even feel safe showering in it much less drinking it. The number on the door fell off and they've "fixed" it twice also, but it keeps falling off. Don't expect things to get fixed correctly.
Also, I thought this was a good place to mention this, about a month after I moved in I leaned on a window sill only to have it immediately snap off. I looked around at the other sills only to realize many of them had been previously snapped and painted back together. The same happened with the crack in my celing. They poorly plastered over it and quickly it was right back out.
The staff was generally rude to me except for the people who greet you when you walk in or when you are thinking of buying. Once you live there you are immediately passed on to another worker who is usually very rude. I was accussed of being late on rent multiple times when I was not and was sent letters telling me to pay or be evicted. After calling them I got it straightened out, but it was very difficult and I was treated like a liar the whole time. ------------ is the worst employee there, avoid her like the plague.
Overall, I must admit this is the worst place I have ever lived. The apartments are overrun by insects. Roaches, centipedes, earwigs, you name it. They spray often but it does not seem to help. We are not dirty people but we can't get rid of these bugs. The prices and size of the apartments are very attractive but rent was raised $100/month every year on me. The safety of the area alone negates any advantage of having a large apartment. Please do plenty of reaserch before making the decision to live here, especially with a family.

I am a current resident of this apartment and have lived here for two years. I must totally agree with the author of the article, The place is unsafe and the people who work in the office are very rude. I will be moving out when my lease is up. Avoid this place like the plague
