Years at this apartment: 2002 - 2003
I have lived here for a year and a half. The reason I stay is that the rent is pretty cheap. While there are definite negatives to living at the Parliaments, there are some positive aspects that I try to keep in mind. To start off, I do live in one of the garden style apartments which sound like they are that much better than the towers. First, the apartments are quite spacious and I have plenty of closet space. I also like how all the utilities are included with my rent which is especially important when my other two roommates like to crank the heat in the winter. Secondly, I think the garden style apartments are attractive from the outside, although the inside is kind of dark. Also, we have more balcony space than almost anyone else I know. What I don't understand is how every other week the water has to be shut off for a day or two in order to perform "routine maintenance". The only thing routine about it is the fact that the maintenance is done every week (or at least, twice a month. This is more frequent then I have experienced at other communities). Also, the parking situation is LUDICROUS. The signage is horrible so almost everyone I have known has gotten towed unless I walk out to the car and make sure they are parked correctly. Usually I tell them to park across the street at Seoul Plaza, which, by the way, I have never had a problem with. The reports of violence etc has not been experienced by me or any of my roommates although I do know of reports of it. My safety is important to me and as a young female in her 20s I've never felt in danger at any time. However, I think since I face out onto Markham and that the area in front of my building seems better lit that less incidents occur there. My car has never been broken into although I worry about it - then again, my car WAS broken into in a nice residential community in Burke so it could happen anywhere. Also, I don't know what this "gang" thing is all about. Overall, I have had a pleasant experience with my neighbors and in particular, people in my building all seem to know each other and I like that sense of community. I think it helps if you live on the top floor of the garden style apartments as the apartments are not very well insulated. Also, we did have a roach problem for awhile and we are very clean. Since the last fumigation it looks like that was taken care of.I guess to end on a positive note, I like the convenience of my apartment to 495 and to grocery stores etc. I like that I can walk to 7-11 although I do admit that I get one of my roommates to go with me after dark (not because I feel particularly unsafe but it's just a sensible thing to do). If you drive down Little Rive Turnpike, Annandale isn't all that attractive but if you drive down Annandale Road towards Gallows you can be reminded of what you can someday achieve - a big expensive house with a two car garage minus roaches.
