too expensive for what you get

I had just moved down to the area and needed a place quickly. I thought Lincoln Towers seemed like a decent place to live, so my roommate and I rented a two bedroom, two bath place. If I had to do it again, I would skip this place. It is so overpriced for what you get -- but in your apartment and with service.
The Pros:
You are a block away from the Ballston metro and there are multiple bus stops right in front.
The fitness center is open 24 hours.
There is usually an attendant, so your packages will always be signed for.
The area is pretty safe, I think.
The Cons:
The rent is just so expensive, especially when everything is not in excellent - or even good- condition. The first night we moved in, in early August in 90 degree heat, our AC wasn't working. They sent someone to "fix" it. The solution was temporary. It broke another three times before they actually replaced what was wrong with it. And still, one of our bedrooms does not cool well -- it would be 65 degrees in the rest of the apartment, and like 80 in mine. I finally gave up calling them and just got a fan and have kept it on.
The counters, cabinets, etc. are not even level. If you sit on your kitchen floor, it's amazing to see what a ------ job they did.
You pay your rent, plus common utilities, plus NORMAL utilities (like electric and cable). The only problem is that you have no say over how much you pay in common utilities, because they just split it up based on how many people are in each apartment. Great, so now that it's near Christmas and there are Christmas trees all over the place, does this mean I am paying electricity to keep them lit 24/7'' Not cool. My "common" utilities are almost always more expensive than my own personal electric bill -- at least $30 PER PERSON, on top of the already-high rent.
The fitness center is kind of a joke. They have three treadmills, one elliptical, and two out-of-date bikes. I used to work out there at 5 a.m., and still couldn't get on machines.
This one might just be the higher apartments, but we are on the 16th floor and you can't open the window at all. It kind of sucks to have a ceiling to (almost) floor window if you can't open it, not even the top. It just forces you to have to have the AC on for way longer than you should.
If both your roommates have a car, you're screwed. Even two bedroom apartments have one space in the garage -- and you have to pay an extra $35/month for it. The second car has to go on a waiting list, which we're told will probably not get to your name before your lease is over. There are area garages, but they are at least $100/month.
And the worst part of it all... the leasing agents. Our leasing agent was so pleasant when we went to rent an apartment, that when I had an issue I needed clarifying, I specifically asked to speak with her. My, how things change once you've signed a lease. This woman, who had been so nice and accommodating just months earlier was now the biggest -----. Her solution to my problem' Move to another Archstone apartment. Yeah, right.
All in all, for the amount you pay, the service is not what it should be. Save your money.

I lived in Lincoln Towers and had the same reaction as the above reviewer. My experience was very similar. Most places in the area include the electric in your monthly rent. Not at Lincoln Towers. Lincoln Towers also charges separate from the rent for Gas, Sewer, Trash, Water and Parking. Your rent is only the beginning of what you will pay. Almost everyone underestimates how much it is going to cost to live at Lincoln Towers because of all the hidden fees. If that isn't enough to put you in the poor house, just wait until lease renewal. Almost everyone is shocked by the size of the increase, they are known for large increases on renewal.

I moved into Lincoln Towers three years ago for $1500 and am now paying close to $2300 because I did not sign another year-long lease. A year lease is still around $1950 for a one bedroom 690 square foot apt. I got a unit on a top floor beside the garbage chute and my apt stunk for two months out of every summer. I made the property manager meet me in my apt to talk about what they were going to do to get rid of the smell and reduce my rent in the process, and they did neither. I basically had to wait until my lease was up and the summer heat subsided to get out of the apt. Now that I'm moving, they miraculously found a way to seal the vents between the chute and my advertising vents and eliminate the smell. Nice, huh? Run far away from this building....it is NOT worth even $1000 a month, even if it is over the metro.
