Pretty good-Any comments about security deposits'

Years at this apartment: 2003 - 2004

I recently moved from Avalon at Arlington Square after one year. Overall, I was pleased with the experience. However, there were three reasons why I chose not to renew my lease. Here they are:

First of all, residents are too cheap to pay $50 for an extra parking space. (Contrary to some posts that I?ve read, there is NOT a huge number of extra spaces in the garage)! That is, unless you want to park on the 5th level and walk a mile to your apartment. As a result, every street within the community is loaded with cars. This makes for very difficult travel around the community because the streets become one-way.

In addition, security functions (for which residents PAY) were not repaired in good time. For a period of about five weeks, the parking garage door for my unit stayed broken, so anyone from outside could come into the garage. At times, both doors would be stuck open, and at one point during the summer, they both jammed closed! Therefore, no one could get out of the garage for at least an hour or so. In addition, front doors and security gates were ALWAYS broken. At one point, after Hurricane Isabel, the building alarm downstairs was wailing for 48 hours. No one seemed to care to look into why the alarm kept going off. (It really makes you wonder what would happen in case of a real emergency).

In addition, people in the community with large dogs are totally obnoxious! Often, people would let dogs run freely through the garage and do whatever they pleased. They walk them down the sidewalk and they take up so much space that you have to step out into the street.

Now, for the good news. During the whole year, I only had one problem with my apartment. (That was an issue with the heat failing to work; maintenance was called and resolved the issue within 20-25 minutes of my call). The appliances were very good quality and never malfunctioned.

The place was also very quiet, aside from the occasional college-kid party and my upstairs neighbor vacuuming the carpet at 11:30 at night. Other than those occasions, you could hear a pin drop in the apartment. For the most part, the neighbors on my floor were friendly and never disruptive.

All in all, the amenities were a plus. I never used the pools, but found the gym and business center to be very nice. The leasing office staff were always nice and listened to my concerns. I?d especially like to compliment the weekend receptionist; she was immensely friendly and helpful each time that my roommate and I came to the office.

As a whole, I recommend this community, but if any of the things I mentioned above annoy you too; think twice.

By the way, to those who rented here before; what were your experiences with the security deposit'
