Years at this apartment: 2007 - 2009
I stayed in Barcroft for about a year and a half. This was the first apartment I've ever rented. Altogether, my experience was entirely positive, if nothing special.
Grounds: Lots of beautiful trees. A decent amount of yardspace, though grass a bit sparse. Everything seemed well kept up. I always enjoyed coming home from work, particularly in the spring, when the cherry blossoms would be out. Lots of squirrels and birds around.
Location: Right near Columbia Pike, which has tons of shops and a couple of clubs. 5 minute drive from several shopping centers. 2-minute drive from route 50. Not within walkable distance from any Metro stop, but there was a bus stop within a 2-minute walk from my house -- buses left from here to several Metro stations, and one of them (the 16Y) takes you right into the heart of DC - MacPherson Square. My only complaint is that it was a little inaccessible for my DC friends -- any non-driver who wanted to come over had to take the metro, then take the bus, to get here.
Maintenance: The only maintenance issue I had was that the garbage disposal got clogged a couple of times. Both times, I called the maintenance hotline and someone came within about 10 minutes. Both times were around 8pm. The third time I remember calling was to report a burning-rubber smell...which turned out to be a pot I had left on the stove. In all cases, the maintenance men were helpful and pleasant.
Parking: My parking decal allowed me to park in the lots out back, which always had a space available. There was also visitor parking along S. Thomas Street, though this almost always filled up by about 7:30 pm, which meant my visitors often had to park rather far away and hike up the steep hill to my place.
Neighbors: Never had problems with them. Some were mildly friendly, most kept to themselves. Never noticed any noise.
Cleanliness: There were some roaches, but only a few isolated incidents -- this never became a problem for me. There were also one or two mice, and this was a little more problematic -- they would poop on the stove during the night. The management did come in (without being asked) to lay poisons and traps, which were effective.
Management: Every time I dealt with them they were helpful and friendly. They never went out of their way to be helpful, but I never ran into a situation that required their intervention. One annoying thing: if you're even a day late with a rent payment, they charge you $50. But it's easy not to be late: they even have a drop slot for checks.
