so how exactly does someone even get into barton house' i've been looking to rent there for over a year and yet everytime i inquire about vacancies i get the same line that there'll be no vacancies for at least 6 months, if then. i recently went there in person and the front desk guy said the same thing ... and that there is no waiting list, and he wouldn't let me go to the rental office. since most properties require 60 days notice then how can barton house say that there won't be any vacancies for 6 months or more'

It's simple enough why it's hard to get in: people rarely leave, because the Barton House is among the best values in North Arlington when it comes to apartments. The best approach is to call or email every few weeks--but if you want a big unit or a particular floor, you're much less likely to ever get one. Supply and demand.
Come to think of it, why would you rate the place at all, since you've never lived there -- and why would you rate it "NO" if you've been looking to rent there for a year and are STILL trying to get in?
THAT strikes me as fishy.

Hi, When I wanted to live here, I emailed religiously once a week asking if there was an opening. After 2-3 months (I forget how long), there was one opening on a lower floor. I took it! Just be persistent, don't give up, and don't wait for a particular floor or side of the building (they're all nice!). And that's how you get in! Good luck!

Its funny you say that, because I had that same problem myself about a year ago.
Im a cuacasion male and I came in one day with an ------- american friend. The old man at the desk was very rude to us and gave us the same line that he gave you.
I came in the next day alone and he was very pleasent, and had no problem with him.
It was very peculiar....

If you are implying that someone at the apartment complex is racist than you couldnt be further from the truth. i am a minority myself and i could say that the majority of the folks i have met in the building are minorities as well. so keep your mean comments to yourself. Barton House is a wonderful building with great staff. I have been there for 2 years and dont plan on leaving unless i buy or leave the area.

I'm just reading reviews trying to find a place to live in a couple years... if anyone is planning on moving out of a one bedroom within the next couple years (May 2009), please e-mail me nmylane@gmail.com.
Oh, and "I'm a minority myself" who says that? I don't know; maybe I'm wrong, but anytime I talk about myself I say that I'm an ------- American woman. And other people that I know say things like "I'm a Latino man." "I'm an Asian woman." "I'm a Saudi Arabian man who can pass for white." I don't know you, and I don't know if the management or employees are racists (i doubt it), but come on people... race needs to stop being a "curse word" that needs to be ------ (bleeped) out. Say what you mean. Express what you feel; imply what you will, but do it standing upright. We're all grown and anonymous.

Referrals are key as well. Over the 4 years living here happily I have had two friends very keen to get in. I referred them and they got in, but it still took a long time. I forget exactly how long, maybe 9-12 months each? They both got a studio on a lower floor as their way in. Both are non-Caucasian. Both had a great time here. I guess if they have just X openings a year and 2X people waiting with referrals it is going to take a long time to get in. I got in in 2003 and it took me some 14 months I think... Again, it was a studio on a lower floor.

There is a waiting list, and to get on it and bumped up you have to be persistent. Call or email every 3 or 4 weeks. I waited 6 months for my apartment. A friend I referred just got in and he waited 6 months for a call about his. You just have to be patient, persistent, and understand that there is very little turnover in this building so the wait will be long!
And give me a break, the "old man" being rude is just paranoia.

I have been waiting to get into Barton House for over two years. I am on the waiting list for both a studio and a one-bedroom. I have gotten the same story described above. A friend's mother lived there and recently died. The manager went to the funeral as did several tenants. Even as a 'friend of' I have not been able to get an apartment. Emailing once a month got me nowhere. I would agree that something is fishy. I have all but given up on them, but do check occasionally.

I don't know what problems you have. Yes, it is extremely hard to get into Barton House but what can you expect when you get so much for your money! I've been on the waiting list for both an efficiency and a one-bedroom for about 15 months; I have been offered a 1-bedroom on 2 different occasions but the timing was not right. I am still waiting and will be patient. I know the time will come. I was told it is easier to get into an efficiency and once you get your foot in the door, you have first dibs on a one-bedroom. I send an email faithfully every week reminding them to keep me on the waiting lists.
