My experience with the Charles E. Smith apartments has not been a good one. I am choosing to write this because I know several people that live in their apartments and they have all been treated the same way -very poorly. I am a very good tenant, clean, rent is always on time or early and I have never had trouble with a previous apartment complex. I had 3 instances where the people in the office lost my check and then threatened to evict me because of late rent. Each time, I had to pay my bank to cancel my rent check and each time the apartment complex would find it somewhere a month later and slide it under my door, with no apology, of course.
The apartments themselves are nice, but old. The kitchens leave a lot to be desired. My oven door wouldn't shut entirely the whole 2 years that I lived there despite numerous requests to fix it.
The rent is very expensive and the rate that they jack it up from year to year is unreal. It is convenient living right above the metro, but to pay almost $1400 for one room is crazy!
The apartments are also very noisy. You will constantly hear those who live above and around you and your water runs nonstop in your bathroom. This never bothered me too much since the utilities were paid for, but of course, they pulled that rug out from underneath me about 6 months into my lease. They stated the increase in gas prices as the reason that we had to start paying for untilities, but we didn't only have to pay for gas. We had to pay for everything, electric, water, sewer, trash pickup, gas, etc. And with the old building and the improper pipes and running water, that added an extra expense onto an already VERY expensive apartment!
There were also cracks all through my walls due to the poor construction of the building. The windows also had incredible drafts in the winter.
