Older but nicely maintained property at decent price

Years at this apartment: 2009 - 2009
After looking at many apartments in the area, we chose Fillmore Garden about three months ago. We've been pleased with our decision. We opted for the 6 month lease which only added $35/month to our rent to total $1110 for a one bedroom - all utilities included.
Though a bit old, the property is very well taken care of. The trees and bushes are beautiful and thoughtfully placed around the grounds. The one time I called with a maintenance request, they've responded within just a few hours.
It's unfortunate that the wooden floors are so creaky. They require that you use rugs to cover most of the floor to minimize the noise for those living below you. The rugs do help the noise but take away much of the value of the otherwise beautiful floors.
Never had a problem parking either on the street just outside or in the apartment's lot. No loud neighbors.
The layout of our 1BR is OK. Kitchen is a bit small for anyone who enjoys cooking. We often use our dining table in the next room to prepare food - would be nicer if we could do this in the kitchen. Also, there is no counter top in the bathroom: just a sink. So our sink edges are often cluttered with various items. A minor issue.
Each apartment has one air conditioning unit fixed to a window. In our apartment its in the living room. The cost of running it is already included in your rent. For an extra fee ($200, I think) they'll install a second window unit (presumably in a bedroom) and the price includes the additional energy requirement for one year.
Trash is collected from your doorstep M-F around 8am. Very convenient. Recycling is available -- you carry the items to bins in the back of the property.
I'm not sure if this is a municipal issue or just for this apartment, but the water has a chemical taste and smell. We use a filter for the water we drink. This seems to help the taste and smell but its not clear how much. Again I don't know if this is about Fillmore's pipes or is the same across the area.
Management have been very helpful. They will allow you to keep a garden on the property if you make special arrangements with them.
Location is good. Easy to get buses on Columbia Pike to any Metro stop. Two pharmacies close. Public library just across the street. Unfortunately, the only grocery store (I'm aware of) that was within walking distance just closed (April 2009). If another is near, I haven't found it. Still, there are several grocery stores within a 10 minute drive if you have a car.
