Love it Here

We're moving out next week, and we're actually quite sad to be going. We love it here.
* The location can't be beat. Metro, library, restaurants, grocery, parks...you can walk to EVERYTHING.
* The front desk and maintenance staffers are SO NICE.
* People in the building are generally friendly.
* Common areas are always spotlessly clean, even the loading dock and trash rooms.
* 24/7 free coffee in the business center is a nice bonus.
* No excessive noise. Yeah, every now and then I'll hear a loud neighbor or a dog barking, but that's apartment life for you. Overall it's pretty quiet.
* Fitness equipment is new.
* Garage has ample parking and is well-lit.
There are only a few downsides:
* While the fitness equipment is great, the fitness room is a little annoying. It's on the top floor with huge windows and no shades. It gets SO HOT in there during the summer, and the building's A/C is not up to the task. The other day I wanted to run on the treadmill but the thermostat read over 90 degrees even though the A/C was on...might as well run outside! Plus, the sun comes in the window and hits the mirrors and blinds you. Some shades would go so far to solve these problems, I don't know why they don't think of it...there are shades in the club room...
* Expensive. Slightly above average for the neighborhood.
* Like a lot of newer buildings, the construction is just okay. Shoddy paint jobs, cracks in the wall, things like that. Nothing that would be a deal-breaker, but it makes the big rent that much harder to swallow.
* One resident "walks" her dog on the rooftop terrace, and the dog pees up there. Ick. I don't know if anything is being done to stop this, even though it's common knowledge. You run the risk of this whenever you move into a pet-friendly building, though. For every dozen responsible pet owners who do the right thing, there is one who causes trouble.
* As others have mentioned, the garage door is prone to breaking. Even in the short time we have been here, it was broken for several days. This area is very safe and the broken garage door didn't make me nervous or anything (I'd even feel 100% comfortable parking on the street around here) but for what you pay it's not a lot to ask that the garage door work properly.
* The power goes out VERY easily in a rainstorm. Dominion is working on burying power lines in the neighborhood starting next week, fortunately. That may increase construction noise here, though, for a while.
Because we have only been here for a temporary stay, we haven't dealt with management, so I can't comment on how good they are.
Anyway, given the choice I'd stay here for a long time. We feel very comfortable here. But I think we'd need to win the lottery :)
