Whoever designed this building was a knucklehead!
There are two elevators for 16 floors of apartments. Right now, one of the elevators is out of order and has been that way for more than a week. The strange (or typical) thing is that it had just been repaired a few weeks ago after being out of order for more than a week. And there is really no way to use the stairs, since both stairwells have an alarmed emergency exit to the street (yes, to the street - not to the lobby). I guess you could walk all the way down to the grimy parking garage and leave through the garage door... The Hampton is definitely not a place for someone who is confined to a wheelchair.
You can have a washer and dryer in your apartment if you pay them an extra $25 per month. However, there is no external vent for the hot air. You need this device that blows the air into a cup of water to cool it. Of course, that steams up your apartment like a sauna, and is terrible in the summer (especially when your A/C is broken and they don't feel like replacing the motor). The steam may feel nice in the winter, but all year you will have dust or lint all over your apartment. I have never lived in a tougher place to keep clean. Of course, you could always try your luck with the pay machines upstairs, but is it worth your time when they are all full' And do you like being gouged'
Having a second car is a nightmare. You actually may not fit in your space. Some kindergartner must have drawn the lines. You will inevitably scrape up aganist one of the support beams. They have tried to cram as many cars in as possible (an extra space costs $75). Oh, and at the request of the county, they circulated a notice threatening to report anyone who has not paid their car tax and does not have their sticker. Big Brother!
They have instituted a new policy of returning packages and deliveries after 2 days. A very snooty memo was posted that complained about not having enough room in the office for all of the packages. This is the usual tone of their messages to us. The spelling and grammar are horrible, too. Not very professional!
We haven't seen too many bugs lately, thankfully. The people across the hall had a terrible, terrible, terrible roach infestation until they set poison traps and gel and then caulked up all the cracks and crevices around their kitchen to prevent them from getting in. Their apartment is right next to the elevator shaft, which is the roach superhighway throughout the building - (the only ones who can use the elevators in a timely manner!)
You can pay extra to have a cat or small dog in the building. Maybe poor Fido couldn't wait for the one working elevator a few weeks back, because I noticed dog turds in the corner of the elevator. One person resorted to throwing their dog's feces off the balcony, which stained the outside wall and earned a rebuke from the building management. There are ticks in the large, unkempt field behind the building - so watch out.
As for security, as long as you have the door code, you can waltz right in. If you can get into the garage, which is not hard to do, you can get right through the door with the broken lock and up the elevator. That door's lock used to work when I first moved in, but has been broken for more than a year. The garage is dark - they have added new lights and painted the walls white recently, but I would still not be too comfortable there if I were a woman walking alone (especially when they inexplicably leave the garage doors open at night like this past weekend).
Is there anything positive to say about the Hampton' Yes... I will be moving out in a month!!!!! I am looking forward to the change - no longer paying too much rent to live in some company's money-making hole.
There is a reason the Hampton is the cheapest apartment building in Crystal City - you will be disappointed and frustrated living here. And although it is relatively cheaper, it is still not affordable. They manage to nickel and dime you anyway, and your rent will increase by at least $100 per year. You are better off somewhere else.
