I have lived at Howard Manor for just shy of two years. No one can believe me when I tell them how little I pay in rent ($870/mo., all utilities included, except electric). My one bedroom apartment is larger than average, there are hardwood floors and a decent-sized balcony. I have always felt safe here. Others are right- the building isn't in great shape- windows let in cold (and hot) air; no dishwasher; laundry situation not ideal (3 washers/dryers for whole complex); kitchen and baths in definite need of updating; heat DOES NOT WORK (Tony has reduced my rent during winter months to make up for cost of running space heaters); parking spaces are tiny, but I've never not found a spot; and my friends have remarked that the hallways and stairwells look like the bottom of a swimming pool thanks to hideous blue paint and tiling. Nonetheless, you are in walking distance to bars, restaurants, famer's market, etc. of Courthouse and Clarendon, close to I-66 and DC, and I've never seen any roaches or rats (I did once have a racoon peer into my 5th floor window). Overall, I'd recommend it to anyone. I think you could pay a lot more for a lot less in this ara.
