I've lived on the first floor on the Fern Street side, facing the parking lot since January, renting through Oakwood. We love the modern, rational design of the apartments (very Dwell magazine) we live better her in less space than we did at the Metropolitan at Pentagon City. The high-ceilings, the stainless steel kitchen, and the easy to clean concrete floor along with the industrial carpet (in the bedrooms) and West Elm furniture do not hold in smells from previous tenants and other apartments like other places do. The apartments across the way are run down and there seems to be a lower-class of people parking outside in the lot, but we don't feel unsafe. Of course, living on the first floor we keep our blinds angled, but the sliding door is reinforced, there is no way someone can jimmy in. Yes, there is noise of people walking above you and if someone is yakking loud in the hall, you can hear that too as well as some water noises from the pipes, I find closing the bedroom and bathroom doors cuts the noise way down. No problems with the thermostat, and one false fire alarm which we didn't go outside for as we could walk out the patio if it was really a fire. The computers in the click cafe are very slow and the elliptical machines in the cardio lab are out of date and failing, but the bikes are new and in good working order. the elementary school, Oakridge is fantastic, just a short bus ride which stops 50 feet from the lofts entrance. There are four zipcars within 1/8 mile and more within 1/2 mile as well as cabs in front of the Marriott on Eads St. A branch libary and park are also less than 1/2 mile away. Would I spend my own money to live here' - no, but then, I believe that most DC area apartments are designed to take advantage of people who don't have the credit, employment history, or long-term job to rent a nearby condo or house for 12-24 months from a private owner for far less money per sq ft. What minor repairs we have requested have been done within 24 hours or less.

i'm curious -- what is the apartment building near you that you consider to be "run-down"?
