At first, Ft. Geogetown apartment seems to be a reasonable place to live, but after you look at other apartments in the areas and you sit down with a piece of paper and a calculator, you will find that the hidden costs of living here extremely high
My roommate and I both graduated from Georgetown's MBA program this year and here is our assessment for anyone who will be living here:
Positive:
Location is the only positive- it is about a 10 minute walk to Georgetown
Negative:
1) Location - because it is located in a very central area in Rosslyn, you will be fighting for street parking with all the commuters who decide to drive their cars and park on the streets in front of the apartment.
Anytime you have an event in DC (Marine Corp Marathon, 4th of July), expect a large group of out-of-towners to turn the streets of Ft. Georgetown into a tail-gate meeting place.
You will have a parking sticker, but there are no assigned parking, so good luck trying to parking when you really want it.
2) Utilites are not included. For a two bedroom apartment (with carpet), it will cost you approximately $200/month if you don't want to keep your apartment at 65 degrees. The windows are in terrible shape and and they are not weather-proof
3) Security - there is no lock required to enter any of the buildings and if you think it looks 'nice' during the day because of the trees, drive back at night and you'll see that the trees will block what little light there is. Several of my classmates were approached by strangers at night this past year and safety is a major concern
4) Lazy Management - If anything is broken, make sure you don't need it for a few days, because that will be the quickest that it gets replaced. If you expect to receive any mail that doesn't come in a regular business envelope and can fit in a small box, you better not live here. The apartment manager refuses to accept any packages for you. The management refused to accept my roommate's computer and printer from FedEx (3 boxes) and spent 1 week trying to track it down, because the management told FedEx to return it to the manufacturer.
5) Shotty Services - There are 8 washers and 8 dryers on the entire premise. It costs $1.25 to wash and dry, but expect these old machines to eat your quarters. If during the tour, they show you the 'large centrally' located laundry room, beware, none of the other machines are new and these machine may look new, but they don't work!!!!
6) Flimpsy walls - you can hear your upstairs neighbor wearing heals on her hardwood floor as easily as you can hear 747s on their final approach to Reagan Airport
7) Total lack of technology upgrade- if you have a computer and you want to have broadband, you better find somewhere else to live. No DSL and the Cable Boxes are so antiquated that if you get a cable modem and the other units that connect to the cable box also get cable, you'll be better off with a dial-up.
We celebrated this month, because our one-year lease was finally up.
