Good location, but not worth it if you don't enjoy eating paint

I have lived in a 1 bedroom at the Potomac Towers for two and half years. Its a great location, but the age of the building and the lack of renovations means there are a some serious problems.
Pros: -Great location - 7 min. walk to courthouse metro, restaurants, shops, etc. - bike path right behind building - 25 minute walk to the heart of Georgetown -Convenience store in basement (but very pricey) -Ample parking -Maintenance staff responds promptly -Front desk will hold packages -Safe neighborhood -Nice backyard and pool area -Ivory (front desk guy) rocks
Cons: -The kitchen cubbards are painted on the inside and paint flakes onto your pots and pans - its bad enough that we have to wash EVERYTHING that comes out of the cubbard before we use it. -Water damage near the windows and in the bathroom causes paint to flake and peel -Mysterious white dust (possible paint'') began showing up in our apartment this winter. It coats EVERYTHING. We bought an air purifier because we were concerned for out health and our electronics -Takes some convincing to get them to replace old appliances -We had to get them to try to fix our oven 3 times before they finally gave up and replaced it -Heat/AC is turned on and off building wide by the management -This means some hot and uncomfortable fall and spring nights -The A/C in our bedroom leaks/makes tons of condensation -It gets really moldy in the summer and gets the floors wet -The fan in the heater in our living room is very noisy - can't get the maintenance guys to fix it correctly -There are a lot of elderly people in the building who call ambulances regularly - expect to see ambulances and fire trucks out front weekly. This is not really a big problem unless you live on a lower floor and are a light sleeper. Then the noise can by annoying.
Also, some renovations are planned on the top floor - not sure what effect this will have - but something to keep in mind.
Overall I would only recommend this building for college students out on their own for the first time. However, for another $100 or so you could live in a MUCH nicer building in the area.

I used to live there, and I agree that Ivory was awesome! I hope they pay that guy well.

I lived in this building for three years in a one bedroom apartment. The only reason we moved was 1. because of renovations being made, and 2. we needed a bigger place for our growing family.
I have to say the older people who used to live here were really a part of the charm and what made the building safe and quiet. I noticed in the months before our move in February 08 the increasing number of college students and younger people who would have parties and play loud music at all times of the night and week. I am not old, but I do work during the week and did not appreciate listening to people shouting and screaming while partying on the floor below me, and trust me the floors are very thick some of the neighbors were just very loud and not respectful of the people around them.
And yes Ivory was the best part of that place.

Lived there for many years. just moved out. very old building; does have low levels of asbestos that is why they are 'renovating'. no fan in kitchen so all appliances and stuff on the counter tops get all sticky. no fan in the bathroom either. Mr. Ivory rocks however the management on site is just horrendous. Especially, Dorothy, Susan & Salvador the maintenance man. Very racist panel of employees.
