I live in a 5th-floor efficiency in the James building. Rent is neither a great bargain nor a total rip-off.

Pros:
- Excellent location, close to shops, grocery, metro, restaurants
- Nice amenities (pool, renovated gym, tennis courts, running trail, dry cleaner on premises, dentist office on-site)
- Generally safe area, even late at night
- Responsive maintenance staff
- Generally clean (I have had no roach/rodent problems)
- Free guest parking

Cons:
- Apartment manager is ineffectual, though never rude
- Occasional noise from neighbors, especially students
- There has been a rash of electrical failures during thunderstorms since Hurricane Isabel
- Common laundry room instead of in-unit washers and dryers

I would recommend this apartment, especially to young singles.
