Moving out - If you are considering River House, shop around, you can do better

I am sure that you've noticed that recent reviews for River House are not that great. The building was sold and new management took over sometime in late 2007-early 2008, that's when things started going downhill. I have experienced many of the issues cited in the reviews that were written this past year, I just read them, the reviewers did a pretty good job, the reviews are accurate (except for the two that were probably written by employees of the building).
Overall cost of living in my apartment has gone up drastically in about a year and a half (utilities used to be included in the rent before the building was sold: not only did the rent increase but utilities are no longer included). To make things worse, there are no meters, you just get charged a portion of the total usage for the entire complex based on the size of your apartment. I work as a consultant and am only home on Sat and Sun, paying a few hundred dollars in utility bills just doesn t make any sense.
I have been living at River House for close to 5 years now. When I first moved, I had to wait a month for an apartment to become available (that s a big deal when you consider the size of the complex- during my first three years here, the building was always at full capacity: when a tenant would leave it never took more than 2 weeks to see new tenants moving in). These days, the building has a lot of empty apartments even though they are offering free months of rent to new tenants: there are just too many people leaving.
When I first moved here I was amazed at the level of competence of the staff, the professionalism of the building manager, the maintenance staff, and the folks at the desk. Most of the staff has been replaced and the new folks are definitely not courteous. The new management doesn t seem to understand that they are in the service industry and the customer is the tenant.
I decided to move, and have spent the past few weekends looking at other apartment buildings in the area. I can say that if you are considering River House, spend some time and shop around, you can do way better for about the same rent, you can get something better, nicer, newer (the building is pretty old, things break down, leak,...). Try Crystal city. I am moving out!

Dear anonymous,
Thank you for sharing. We are currently looking at River House and I was wondering if you could share some of the competitively-priced/newer places that are near a metro that you've found? I am new to the area and don't want to make a mistake. You can email me directly at: applegirl51@gmail.com. I appreciate your leads!
