I can answer the question about bugs and cockroaches and the answer is yes!
Just a few weeks I killed one in the stairwell while I was on my way to do some laundry.
Also, mice are a big problem here, which is the reason I came on to write this review.
I had mice in my apartment for weeks this winter. After two visits by the exterminator, 4 visits by maintenance staff and one visit by my landlord himself, it took 9 traps in my 2x2 sq. ft. kitchen to catch one of the three mice. I thought the problem was solved when I went a whole 48 hours without seeing them (a first in weeks). But low and behold, here I sit at 1am finishing up work and there is still a mouse running around my living room (14 weeks later...)
So I think there's a bit of a mouse problem in my building. Just a heads up, it may be something you have to deal with if you live here.
Also, this isn't a big deal, but don't count on having any control of your heating or cooling system at all. No matter where you turn the control knob, the same temperature heat will still come out the vent, even in the 90 degree April day. If you choose to live here, I would strongly recommend getting some ducktape and covering the vents altogether and just making good use of an air conditioner or floor heater.
