I lived in River Place West for nine years from 1997 - 2006. I chose it because of its location (close to DC and close to the metro), and because it was very affordable. The apartment was decent but neighbors were very inconsiderate. The pool is nice and big enough to swim laps in.

I rented from an out-of-state landlord, which actually worked out quite well. When something broke, like the dishwasher, I would call him, go the store, pick out the applicance, arrange for its installation, and then deduct it from the rent.

Bugs (roaches) were a huge problem. I had them all over the kitchen. I would open the dishwasher in the morning and there would be one or two crawling on the lip. The complex offers a free extermination service. I once had them come out once-a-week for a month, and that cured the problem for about 1/2 year.

The previous management excelled in doing nothing and were extremely difficult to deal with. However, the new management seems to really want to make improvements and be helpful.

The place is noisy! Sounds carry through the stairwells and the vents. Neighbors often had their stereos playing with heavy bass, which I then would feel in my apartment. If someone was singing in the shower in a unit nearby, I could hear it my bathroom. Also, strangely, people liked to leave their doors open, conversations and TV noise would easily carry into the hallway and into surrounding aparments. My apartment overlooked the parking lot. Kids and adults would hang out in the playing lot, and I could hear every word and sound in my apartment. Parents would let their kids play unsupervised in the parking lot, so if there was a problem there was nobody to complain to and the kids just ignored you if you asked them to be more quiet. If noise bothers you, then I would not rent here!

Also, smells from people cooking in their apartments drifted into my apartment. I fixed this by blocking the space between the front door and the floor with a towel.

Additionally, guest parking is a problem. There is no guest parking in the complex. There is a pay lot next to it and there is some street parking. 3mPoZ6gGN6wTPgNi4L2C
