Sheffield Court

There is a reason it is cheaper than most.

Years at this apartment: 2004 - 2005
We moved into Sheffield Court because the rent was so much lower than the other properties were offering. Finding this apartment at $1000 per month as opposed to $1500 seemed too good to be true, and it was, following is a list of reasons why:
1. Parking - Parking is free for everyone on the lease, which seems great! Exept for the fact that guests park for free as well. Guests are only supposed to park in certain areas, but this does not happen. I can't tell you how many times I have come home only to find that there is literally no place to park, then to notice on my mile walk to the building that about 1/3 of the parkers are guests. Sheffield Court needs to tow guests who are parking in the wrong areas, but they do not.
2. Overall apartment quality - the apartments are old (don't let the new windows fool you) this means that they get dirty very easily and aren't in the best condition. They are very small, and the appliances are the cheapest ones that they could find. The carpet is old and not comfortable, and always seems dirty (vaccuming doesn't help) and the floors are not laid well (the bathroom floors collect gunk like you would not believe, and our kitchen linoleum has been coming up in several places all year but they refuse to fix it (they claim that it is due to the uneven floors..)
3. Bugs and other rodents - I didn't believe the posts that I read on here stating that the apartment had lots of bugs, and mice, but it is true. Just yesterday I killed not 1, but 3 BIG spiders in our apartment (SO glad spring is here!). We have had problems with centipedes (if you haven't seen one, be thankful) The apartment is horrible.
4. Appliances - I know that I already said that they suck, but just to expand, they are very old, the washer and dryer are TINY and are stacked, I have several bumps on my head from trying to pull laundry out of the washer and have lost several socks due to the heighth of the dryer (I am 5'4" and can't see inside of the thing). The washer leaves rust marks on our white clothes and the dryer only works half the time. You can't use a blow dryer and an iron at the same time unless you want to blow a fuse, and the stove never seems to be clean. There is no ventilation on the stove so anytime you cook something you set off the smoke alarm and fill the tiny apartment with smoke. Also, I can't tell you how many times we were without hot water...
5. The staff - once you have signed your lease the staff couldn't care less about you. They are delayed in returning phone calls and seem annoyed that you are asking them to do anything.
6. The grounds - People are supposed to clean up after their dogs, but they don't, so please be careful if you ever walk through the grass, and I don't recommend EVER going ANYWHERE barefoot, ick, which brings me to another point:
7. Dogs (and other noise) - Practically everyone has dogs, and I like dogs, I just don't like having them everywhere all of the time. You can oftentimes hear dogs barking at night (both outside and inside of the building), also, the complex is off of Route 50 and you can hear noise from the road ALL night long (i.e. sirens, horns, even just cars passing by, very annoying) in addition to your neighbor's kitchen and bathroom noises (shower, toilet, garbage disposal, etc). Yes, you can hear everything through these walls.
8. Stairs - Moving is a tremendous pain since the complex doesn't have a single elevator, good luck lugging that new television up all of those stairs in the summer, it gets a little muggy in those halls since the building itself isn't air conditioned.
9. Building maintenance - A few months back I noticed that our carpeting was soaked through, and realized that our air conditioner was leaking. It took Sheffield Court 3 weeks to get in to fix this (but no, we weren't reimbursed for the rent as promised in the contract as they were waiting for the proper parts to come in). At the end of the process we were left with moldy and mildewed carpet, and an uneven floor (it was so wet that the floor was warped and they refused to fix it). We asked for new carpeting since the old was moldy, but were told that it was not indeed moldy (it is, I promise you) and that it would not be replaced. Gross.
10. Smell - Finally, the apartments just smell, I guess it is because the buildings are old, but they always smell. You notice it when you enter the building, and more so when you enter any of the individual apartment. When you are viewing you assume that it is a 'clean apartment smell' or something, even though it doesn't smell clean, and overlook it, but trust me, it doesn't even go away.
11. Oh yeah, one final point - Snow removal, They are horrible about removing snow, the walkways are always covered and slippery, and use lose many of the precious few parking spaces that we have.
All in all, this place is terrible and I would NOT recommend it to my worst enemy. We have sincerely hated living here and are currently counting down the days until moveout.
Thanks for reading!
