decent place to live

My husband and I have lived here for almost two years and are thinking of moving. We live on the third floor, away from the highway. We've heard complaints about noise from the other side of the complex, but generally our place is quiet.

We've had no pest problems at all--not a single bug or mouse, although the buildings are older and have fairly frequent maintenance problems (including leaks, etc.) Maintenance generally paints over any problems, a strategy that seems fairly common in apartment complexes in general. However, maintenance comes very quickly for emergencies and reasonably quickly otherwise, although you really need to get your complaint in writing and to the office.

Since we've moved in, Sheffield Court has limited their advertised "amenities"--they told us there were apartments available for guests at reasonable nightly charges, but by the time we moved in, they were gone. They advertise the use of grills, but they generally last a weekend or so before they are nasty (and difficult to count on). Overall, though, the gym is functional, the movie rental system reasonable, and the office staff always very helpful. Frequent signs remind the rude guests to clean up after themselves in the clubhouse and after their pets, a problem that appears periodically and goes away as management posts angry notes. Equity seems to do what it can, but the neighbors need to be responsible for themselves.

When we moved in 1.5 years ago, our rent was $1255/month for a one-bedroom. It's now up to $1343, which is a little aggravating. I'm also a little upset with their sky-high "month-to-month" rents. My husband and I have some work-related issues that we need to resolve before we decide about the lease. Charging tenants who have been here for 2 full-year cycles over $1600/month to extend their residency by a month or so seems absurd.

We like being able to walk to Clarendon, and we like the neighborhood feel. We've been fairly happy here.
