I read the comments posted before this one and quite a few were exaggerated. I have lived here since 2003 and don't plan on moving until I can purchase a place. The rent is good for the apt size and location. In other words, if saving money is a goal, this place might be worth considering. You can certainly find newer and nicer places, but this very old, god-awful ugly buidling is well maintained. I have never had a maintenance issue that was not handled in a reasonable amount of time. Parking is ample. You can easily walk to 2 metros, restaurants, movies, 2 grocery stores, mall, park, tennis courts, track, library, more.

There was a roach issue in the summer of 2005. It was awful and I was one of those who complained loudly. In the two years before that I had never had a bug problem and have not had one since. I think someone dropped the ball when management switched in 2005 but things are back to normal. I would not live here if there were an ongoing bug problem. By that I mean in the 3 years I've lived here I could count on 1 hand the number of times I ever saw any bugs before and after the summer of 2005. The only place I ever see bugs is sometimes in the trash room. I suppose those who live next to the trash chute might have issues in their apts, but let's face it... if you rent an apt next to a trash chute you are going to have problems. This is true no matter the age of the bldg. I also keep my kitchen and bathroom clean so perhaps that may be the reason I have not had a problem. And let's face the truth... some people are nasty and their roach issues are of their own making.

If you want a nice sized apt in a great location for a relatively reasonable price and you are willing to put up with the tradeoffs of an old, ugly bldg that is normally well-maintained but periodically shows its age, consider 1020. There are no bug issues.

You will be surprised how many old peolpe live in that building that fits your description....some are mentally ill and cannot fare better by themselves....by the way I have not lived there for a while..perhaps you can help your neighboors that cannot help themselves....?

There are quite a few older folks who live here and that is a good thing. My response was to the people writing on this site who have so many awful things to say about the bldg, but still chose to move in and live here. The older, ill folks are not the ones griping here.

Dude! People move in because de do not know in advance the type of place it is.....then they move out....I am sure you do not expect ill people to get "agile" enough to gripe online.....pleaaseee...

"Dude! People move in because de do not know in advance the type of place it is" That makes absolutely no sense. They visit the bldg, get a walkthrough of the apt, and can check out any other parts they are curious about. They know EXACTLY what type of place they are moving into... a 40 year old high rise

i unfortunately did not know that being next to the supposedly enclosed trash shoot would be such a problem... nor that it hadn't been cleaned in years... my room was fumigated, bombed, etc several times... i kept it clean, but when bugs fall on you in the shower, while you're eating, and crawl under your bed there's a problem... i was homeless for a good 2 months because my apt was uninhabitable... the mgr was rude and they wouldnt move my apt... i wrote letters, sent pictures, etc... the mgr above was equally rude and took a long time to move me, and in the end said they wouldnt compensate me for the rent i continued to pay but didn't live here during that time frame... that mgr left or was probably fired, and this other guy came in to help out who had worked here before was amazing and a godsent... he took my case and took care of it in a day... a year later i finally got compensated and am very thankful... place is old but free utilities (jack up the ac), pool, cable hbo, cheapest rent in arlington, 2 blocks from the metro, and nice neighbors aren't bad... i like it much better now... but do NOT live on the lower levels or near the trash shoots... the problem is gone, but you never know... oh and free parking is also hard to come by in this area...

Read the post entiled "You're a FOOL...", it explains the issues in detail. The older people living here are paying very little because they have been here for decades. They cannot afford to move anywhere else. And they don't use the internet so don't expect to hear from them. This building wouldn't care anyway because elderly people are generally disregarded in society as a whole. They give up after a while. Bottom line - you pay for what you get in Arlington.

In 1963 I had a lovely 10th fl. apt. The lobby was beautiful, large original oil paintings above the elegantly modern upholstered lobby furnishings....carpets, lamps, coffee tables held The Wash. Post. The Mgr was an older, fashionable woman whose only fault was her perfume filled the lobby. OMG!.. but she was so glamorous and business like...I just held my breathe! My neighbors included an Army Bird Colonel, a high ranking State Dept offical and a couple Embassy people who couldn't afford Mass Ave. rent. in D.C. . My little girl went to Congressional School,..the bus picked her up at the portico out front. I remember there was a library across the street. A nice restraunt nearby called The Lamplighter, shops, drugs stores, etc. Summertime the residents gathered around the pool for cocktails after 5pm. A professional photogrpher had a good movie camera so in Dec ,when the big Christmas tree was in the lobby, he would show his summertime movies when we all gathered there. What a great, homey, an elegant place the The 1020 was then. Wallpapered halls with cordinated carpet...Classy people in a classy place. WHAT HAPPENED ? Barbara Farrington
