Place to live, but not a place to call home

I've lived at VA Square for 6 years. Yep, 6 of 'em. I knew Oscar, I know Eileen, and yes there is a difference. Dittmar as a company has changed too. If you're looking for a place to live, you'll probably be ok here. The front desk staff are very nice, our maintenance guy is friendly, there's a decent minigym, and the front foyer makes a nice impression. Security is an absolute joke though. When I have friends over they just follow someone in and knock on my door about 50% of the time. We've only had two thefts in the building since I've lived here, but that's all neighborhood and nothing to do with building security. You will, however, be treated like a child, you will have notes stuck under your door and threats made about compliance (not fire safety, just whatever strikes management's fancy that day -- plus Eileen will throw "the law" in your face without actually knowing what she's talking about, evidenced by "the bike in your parking spot is a fire code violation, but the pile of 10000 bricks and cinderblocks we put in the spot next to you isn't").
The homeowners association is a good analogy. This apartment has a full time employee who considers it her job to "patrol the neighborhood" and nag people. *Reasonable* homeowners associations would address actual dangers (mirrors in the garage are a GREAT idea, I've nearly been killed walking to my car) and would understand that you have a HOME and not every weed in the garden needs to be plucked within 48 hours of breaking the surface. If something is totally out of hand THE RESIDENTS will complain, and it then becomes the job of the many to prevent one bad person from ruining the neighborhood. *This* HOA is random and aggressive and nosy, and your enforcer is one person with nothing better to do. You can live here, but you will never be allowed to think you have a home... you are paying for the privilege to live under their rules.
The smoke smell is *not* isolated to one apartment with poor weatherstripping. If you visit, walk some halls in the evenings. If you live here, try opening your windows on a pleasant day, especially if you're in the interior courtyard. Ironically, I actually support people's right to smoke on their balcony because I do think this should be a home for them... unfortunately the building design means huge negative pressure in the building -- so everything outside is sucked inside, and everything in apartments (cooking smells, smoke, etc.) is sucked into the hallways. You can even hear the front doors howl when a window is open in the apartment.
I have no doubt there are even worse places to live in Arlington, but you can take or leave this place. It's just another profit making corporate venture, it'll be turned into condos when the tax writeoff is complete, and while you're here don't forget to cross the Ts in Dittmar so you never forget who owns you.
5 stars in 2001, 2 stars in 2007.
As far as the positive reviews always landing immediately after a negative, I'm suspicious too. They hung a huge "Apartmentratings.com" banner outside a while back... you think no one's keeping an eye on their reviews'

I'm sorry to hear about the second hand smoke, but I appreciate the fact that they are enforcing the rules in the parking garage. In my building (NOT Virginia Square Plaza Apartments), quite a few people store extra stuff around their parking spaces and it can become a problem when people are not careful and courteous about handling their stuff. For example, there have been a number of times when other people's stuff has "wandered" over into my space and I've had to move it out of the way before I could park. Also, one of my neighbors was not careful about handling their stuff and caused some damage to my car. I recommend that people also look at the parking garage when looking at the apartments to get an idea of what they are getting into.

This review is spot on. I'm glad to see there are other people out there who've been frustrated with her also. It's nice to have a forum where prospective renters can find out what they're getting into ahead of time.
To the first respondent, I'm sorry to hear about your garage troubles - did you try to take it up with those neighbors yourself? I think your situation is pretty uncommon. As far as I could see, people only had a few things in their spaces and was never close to spilling over into another's spot. Ironically, the only person in our building with overflowing stuff in the garage is Eileen with her construction materials.
To the other person, who's talking table saws here? - the guy was talking about a bicycle. Mirrors would help in our garage. Often times you don't see even people using headlights until they're 1/2 around the turn by the ramps. Please keep your asinine comments to yourself when you don't even live in this building in the first place.

I rent from a Dittmar apartment (not Virginia Square) and these posts surprise me. I've NEVER seen anything other than automobiles stored in our garage - what the hell would you put there anyway? Who in a North Arlington apartment needs a table saw?
Our garage has mirrors, but they do little good. I find the biggest problem in the garages is a failure of people to keep right, turn their lights on, or if you're a pedestrian - to watch where the hell you're walking. That means if you see a car with its lights on, it's going to move. Don't walk out in front of it like you're the lord of the garage, the building, and the surrounding 200 acres.

This is by far the best place in Arlington to rent. The people writing these poor reviews and bringing down the rating of this building are BAD neighbors. They don't like that they have to keep the parking areas and balconies clean and they don't care about maintaining the quality of the building. This building had an almost perfect rating before these fellows tried to sabotage the score.
By the way, I am a real tenant and I think it's a shame that these irresponsible people are bringing the place down because they would rather live in an unsafe dump.

This review really is spot on. I've been here a couple of years (so I too lived under the Oscar regime) and there really is a difference. But regardless of what used to be, this review is very accurate. The apartments are nice enough (though the efficiencies SERIOUSLY lack sunlight) and for now the price is pretty good for the area.
I'm not only suspicious of the great reviews being posted right after the negative reviews, but the speed with which reviews are commented on. That's all I'm saying.

I agree 100% with the original review.. The second hand cigarette smoke is overwhelming in the hallways.

Melhen, it's too bad your 100% opinion of this place is skewing what should really be about a 40% approval rating. Are we bad neighbors? Maybe we're just normal people, and you're anal retentive about things that don't matter to most people. sheesh...

I'm so glad that I saw this post because I thought that I was the only person experiencing the AWFUL second-hand smoke. Even with the doors closed the smell is absolutely OVERWHELMING. As soon as I can (primarily convenience for the time being) I will likely move to another complex and hopefully experience clean air in my own apartment. Oh, one other complaint, the hallway on the top floor has no air conditioning. It's like the vents are blocked but they're not. Even after complaints, apparently nothing can be done.
