First apartment in the city - Not terrible, but not amazing

Negative:
My boyfriend and I moved here last year for his college and the whole time we have had problems with roaches. In the beginning they showed us an apartment in the other building which looked very nice and I didn't see any kind of bug, but when we went to move in we got one in the building opposite to it. There were a ton of roaches originally so my boyfriend and I went to the store and stocked up on spray, bombs, and traps. Of course it took awhile, but it eventually worked (for a bit).

The walls are a bit thin so we can hear what our neighbors do. The floors are a bit thicker to where we can't hear the people above us talk, but we can hear them walk around and what not.

Luckily my boyfriend doesn't get home too late because parking is a bit sparse after 7pm.

There are many young guys who hang out in and outside the lobby downstairs. They do look as any guy will, but I have never had any problems.

In our bathroom there isn't any type of air vent which does cause a bit of a mold problem, but nothing major since we leave the door open when we shower.

Not too much lighting in the back at night. I don't suggest going out back there at night if you're female and alone.

Positive:
The complex has taken on new management since then and it has improved. They installed new windows a few months ago and they are VERY well insulated. The management hires exterminators every month so while we still get the occasional roach... it is nothing like it used to be. We haven't had any car issues or theft. Up here on the 4th floor we have only ever had the trash drop down thingy clog up once which was unclogged the next day. We also had a problem with our older fridge and it was replaced the day we reported it. They replaced the AC/Heater unit filter not long ago which was nice too. The halls/lobby are cleaned weekly along with any trash outside. The pool was opened in about June and it still is. Everyday I see kids splashing around having a good time. (Yes, there are lifeguards) The entrances do require a key to enter and you can dump stuff in the back dumpsters if it's smaller than a dining room chair. I'm not sure when it happened, but I know the new management had gotten the card machine in the laundry room, the machine takes your money and puts it on the card, working again. (Was broken for the longest time)

The fire alarm in the hall used to go off a heck of a lot more than it does now. We have only ever had to leave the building once because of an actual fire type emergency. It wasn't anything big and I take it just affected the apartment it happened in. When the fire alarm does go off it normally takes an hour to get shut off when maintenance is not here during works hours. When they are here it takes maybe 15 minutes.

I would recommend this place to anyone who doesn't mind some noise from the kids, possibly some neighbors too, and can deal with a roach here and there. I don't believe this place is "ghetto" and for my first apartment experience it wasn't too bad.

For our studio/efficiency apartment we pay $700.00 a month. Utilities normally runs us around $80.00 for summer and winter because we don't like to freeze in the winter or bake in the summer.
