Nice, but Expensive

My fiance and I have lived here for two years this summer and are looking to move to a more affordable apartment complex closer to 267. Every place has its ups and downs, and although I do agree with other reviewers on some points, I think this place has more going for it than against it. So I'll just run it down:

Nice grounds

Beautiful pool

Walking path around complex

Gates are okay - they are stuck open in the snow, and sometimes get stuck open 1/2 way - there are only 2 gates, so one broken makes it a decent inconvenience to get in.

Staff is okay - relatively high turnover rate - and can be rude if you need help. My car died in its parking spot this winter and I asked the leasing office for a jump and they said no "for liability reasons" and didnt offer any other help or suggestions. Just "no" and a "sucks for you" attitude.

Maintenance is fast! Our heater broke (stayed on) this winter at 10pm, and maintenance was at our apartment at 11pm.

Thin walls - you can hear everything upstairs including the dog that runs like a horse at all hours.

Nice to have a ceiling fan, newer stove/range & washer/dryer in unit...

Windows are certainly drafty & nothing maintenance can do to fix it - we tried!

We had mice for a month or so - we're clean, but they still came in through a hole behind the fridge. I guess our neighbor isn't as clean as we are. A few traps fixed the problem for good though.

Pool is nice - but yes, it is chock full of kids during the summer.

Nice gym. Equipment always works, open at all hours.

Nice computer room - but too few computers (3) and are alway occupied by teenagers for HOURS.

Dog friendly - but not everyone scoops, which sucks and some people don't even keep them on leashes!

Small space for too much money.

Community activities (pool parties) but seem more geared towards families.

Right around the corner to Harris Teeter, but its a bit expensive too.

Right on Rt 7 and a mile or two from 28.

Have always felt safe, no issues or worries concerning robberies, etc.

Parking is a shuffle - sometimes your spot is open, sometimes there's a work truck parked in it for two months straight. If you're having company (not that you have to room to, cause its so expensive for just a one bedroom 692 sq foot apartment - who has the room for a party or houseguests') parking will be a problem.

Also, despite usual 'safe' feeling, I am unsure of neighborly activities sometimes - there are two guys who sit in a purple scion every other night playing techno music for at least an hour at a time... I can only imagine why - and it can't be good.

But overall, the price is my biggest complaint. We are moving because its just not practical anymore. If you can afford it, its a lovely place in general. If not, sacrifice the pool and the gym (how often do you really use it') and find a place with a better price tag that sacrifices a few unneccessary ammenities.

****UPDATE 10/30/07****
Moved to another apartment on property b/c of the girl with a horse for a dog living above us. Now we have an old mother/daughter pair living above us that play their tv too loud, especially very early in the morning.

More importantly, our dog was attacked on property by an irresponsible neighbor who decided their dog would be happier off leash. Our dog is only 6 lbs, theirs over 40. We were very lucky, however we still do not feel safe on property with our dog. The current owner still lets their dog off leash when they feel no one is looking. It is a chronic risk to us - coming down the building stairs we are concerned that we'll be blindsided by a large dog rushing to us. We have brought the issue to the leasing office, especially since there is a clause in our lease (and VA state law) that all dogs must be on leash when outside. They didn't care enough to post a reminder notice to our buildings. (We called them three times concerning the issue w/in a short period of time).

Also, we have a horrible spider problem in our building and so do adjacent buildings - I suppose its because we face the pond by the business center. We told the staff about it and all we heard back was "they spray every Tuesday". It clearly isn't enough when you open your apartment door to one big, bad, a** bug hanging at face level. I've counted 11 spiders in the ground level archway to our building.

So just FYI - the staff at the Ashborough aren't worth their weight in garbage. Turn over is too high, and if they do stick around for longer than a few months, they're still not much help. Can't wait to buy a house.
