Mostly Great, But Pricey

Years at this apartment: 1998 - 2001
I lived here when I first moved to Virginia, and for the first couple of years the only thing I could "complain" about was the size of the apartment (I had a 1BR, and wound up using the tiny dining room space as a den for my computer and digital piano). However, by my third year there, rent had increased by close to $300/mo.! And the increases got bigger and bigger each year: the first year it was only $25-30, but then the jumps got into the $100s. Ultimately, I moved because I couldn?t keep up, and also needed a bigger apartment. But I would have happily stayed if I could have afforded a 2BR there. I know rent is even higher now than when I left, but hopefully the increases have stabilized somewhat.
That said, rent increases were happening all over, and aside from the money it was a great place to live. It was my second consecutive Town & Country complex, and in the 7 years I lived in their properties I never had any complaints about maintenance or management. University Heights was much nicer than the previous property I?d lived in: newer, cleaner, with its own washer & dryer, etc.
Parking was ok, but if I came home late at night (after dinnertime) it could be a challenge. I never had to park terribly far away, though, and the lighting was good.
Safety is good there: the complex is just down the street from a police academy and sherrif?s office.
The location is fine: just off Rt. 7, near the intersection with Rt. 28. I had a nice, 20-minute commute into Reston, and Leesburg was about as far away. It has an Ashburn ZIP code, but is actually closer to Sterling. Nothing is within walking distance, but plenty of shops and stores are just a traffic light or two away (including Dulles Town Center mall). The location downsides were that it felt far away from Fairfax County (even though it really isn?t), and the nearest Metro station was a good 30-minute drive.
There were no noise issues. Unfortunately, my ground-floor apartment was right next to the tennis courts (I?m talking literally feet away from it), so every now and then I?d be woken by that tennis-ball-being-hit-around noise on a weekend morning. But the neighbors were great, and the location itself was quiet.
If you can afford it, and if you don?t need to be close to "the action," this is a great place to live.
