I have lived at University Heights for 4 years now. It has been sold approximately 4 times since living here. I moved here 4 years ago so that my child could attend a school in the area that offered the services he required. Unfortunately, we are stuck here until he finishes his schooling as there are very few apartment complexes in the area that are in his school district. I have to say that the new manager here at University Heights is the worst that we have had to deal with. Most of the staff have either quit or she has fired them. Her name is Maria - she is the most uncaring, unfriendly and rude manager I have ever had experience with. Before she came, you would go into the office and the staff would greet you by name and ask how you were doing' Since she came - no one likes their job there any longer and frankly are afraid to talk in fear of being written up for anything by her. I happened to be in the office one day when an elderly resident came by to report that her washer was not working. She explained that her elderly husband was in a wheelchair and had a bladder problem and needed to have her washer looked at as soon as possible. The new manager told her that it would be a while before they could come and look at the problem and she was advised to go to a laundry mat. She did not offer any other alternatives for this woman. The woman again tried to explain and Maria raised her voice to her and said there was nothing she could do she would just have to go to the laundry mat. Anytime you have repairs that need to be done - it takes weeks for them to respond and usually you are so frustrated that you have already fixed it yourself at your expense!

Also - there was a need in our building a few months back for a resident to break the glass to access the fire extinguisher due to fire. The office was notified of this and advised that they would have to have the fire extinguisher recharged and the glass fixed. The other day - there was a fire in the mulch at one of the residents patio. They got the fire extinguisher out to put out the fire and they had never recharged the fire extinguisher. They simply put it back in the holder empty. This is a major fire hazard!! and again the management/office was notified. The fire extinguisher has been sitting out in the breezeway now for 6 days and no one has been by to recharge or do anything for that matter. Today, we are filing a complaint with the Fire Marshall against the complex. Let's see it they respond to that. The new manager also seems to make new rules as she goes without notifying any of the residents. She has changed the age that residents can access the computers in the clubhouse, now everyone has to have a poolpass and were never notified that they needed one. Trash has been continuously piling up in front of the trash compactors and in the large trash areas. Before she came these were taken care of weekly instead of piling up and staying a mess. Our apartment/resident committee has sent an email to the owners in Florida with no response. Obviously no one cares!

Contact the BBB in FL, that is what I had to do to get anything done with the home office in FL. I wish you luck this was the WORST place I EVER lived!

I hear you! The manager is very abrasive. Also, it is hard to get someone to care. The BBB have been notified, but they do not do much except send mail in my humble opinion. The route that you should possibly consider is filing a complaint to Virginia Department of Housing & community development: http://www.dhcd.virginia.gov/AboutDHCD/.
