Liked our apartment and don't regret living here - but have complaints.

Years at this apartment: 2004 - 2005
My boyfriend and I lived here for a year starting in summer 2004. When we looked at the floor plans and decided which one we wanted, we made it VERY clear to our leasing agent that we absolutely did NOT want a fireplace. Because of the way it was jutting out into the room we wouldn't have had space to set the room up the way we wanted to, and our furniture just wouldn't work with a fireplace.
We picked an apartment with a pool view (which we thought would be really nice in the summer) but didn't get to do a walk through b/c it was still occupied when we signed the lease. It was a good 3 weeks before we moved in after doing the paperwork. I even remember asking more than once to make sure it didn't have a fireplace, because it was very important to us. The leasing agent assured us that this particular unit did NOT have one.
Move in day arrived and we couldn't have been more excited. We picked up our keys and drove up to our new place. We opened the door, and guess what the first thing we saw was' A fire place!!! We turned right around and went straight to the renter s office. The same person we signed the paperwork with was not in that day, but we talked to the lady who had given us our keys. We told her the situation, and that we had been assured there wouldn't be a fireplace. She looked at us confused, and said that all top floor units have fireplaces. I was furious and very upset. We said that if we had been aware that there WAS a fireplace we would have picked a different unit (I remember there were a few to pick from, but we liked the idea of a pool view). We wanted to know if there were any open without one - of course there weren't. So we were stuck. The only thing she could offer us was $15 off each months rent as an apology for being misinformed. It sucked.
We moved in during the summer and really liked having the pool right outside our apartment. We could sit on the deck, and it almost felt like being at a little resort!
However, things turned for the worse. When fall came and the pool was closed they didn't put a cover over it OR even bother to drain the pool. After a few weeks it started to get murky and it was full of leaves. A few more weeks went by and the water was puke green and it looked like a swamp. We were so mad that our previously beautiful "resort-like" view had now turned into a swampy nightmare. After a few months they finally drained it before it froze.
On a different note, we still loved our apartment. We were happy to have a full-size washer and dryer with a walk-in laundry room/pantry. We previously lived in an apartment complex with stackables, and no pantry. We quickly ran out of cabinet space for our food and hated doing tons of small loads of laundry.
We had a few minor maintenance issues, but they were quickly resolved. They were very prompt in fixing everything.
Not that this is the complexes fault, but we had neighbors who were not the friendliest. When we would pass on the stairs, they would run into their apartment and slam the door like we had a disease or something! We were hoping to make friends with our neighbors but that certainly did not happen. The only people we met were at the fenced in dog park. We didn't even have a dog but we'd stop just to watch the dogs play and we met a few people. (A really nice amenity if you have a dog, by the way. And large dogs are allowed as well)
We even had a cop that lived in the neighborhood who left a ticket on my boyfriend s car b/c his stickers were expired. (Again, not the complexes fault but it sucked to have your own neighbor giving you tickets!) :)
Parking in our building was HORRIBLE. There were places in the complex with TONS of spaces available, but we were in a part of the complex with more buildings than parking spaces. Sometimes there would literally be ZERO spaces within 4 or 5 buildings of ours. I wouldn't get home from work sometimes until 9pm and there'd be nothing. We would actually have to park at the opposite end of our section of the neighborhood and we'd walk down a wooded trail that came up on the back of our building. It was a MUCH shorter walk than going the long way on the sidewalk, but in the rain and snow it was a pain. So before you sign a lease on a specific unit, drive by it at night and check out the parking situation. It may be a part of the neighborhood with plenty of parking, or it could be quite a hike to get home after parking! We would have loved to have rented one of the garages in front of our building to have a guaranteed spot, but the entire time we lived there not a single one became available.
The only other small complaint is the placement of our smoke detector. It was right near the kitchen and when I would boil water or cook stir-fry, the alarm would go off and we'd have to take the batteries out. A pain to have to do every time you cooked!
We didn't really have a problem with noise, being on the top floor.
No apartment complex is perfect, and our problems weren t much compared to other experiences we ve now had in other complexes since we lived in Bent Tree. It s not the greatest neighborhood, but overall we did enjoy our year there.
