I was very disappointed when I showed up at this apartment complex, ready to sign my lease after waiting on the waiting list for several months. The management had been running a special when I first called, and told me that the 1 bedroom apartment that normally goes for 770 had a special that brought the monthly rent to 570. I thought this was incredible, and was willing to wait on the waiting list until a unit became available. I was so incredulous that the rent was at 570 that every time I spoke with the management (first phone conversation, walk through tour, and several phone conversations upon an opening), I made sure to verify that the rent was indeed 570, and they assured me that it was. When I arrived at the leasing office to sign my lease, I found that they had changed the rent to 770, saying that the special was 200 dollars off of 970 a month. I told them that they had repeatedly promised me 570 a month, but the woman I had always dealt with was conveniently on the phone and otherwise busy, and they did not want to argue over my word against hers. I phoned their office later in the day to ask the woman I had originally dealt with what her recollection of our previous conversations had been. She swore up and down that she never would have told me that the rent would be 570.

I realize that rent this low in the Northern Virginia is a steal, and that is why I was so excited about moving to this seemingly wonderful community. However, I KNOW that I never could have made up rent this good, and that this woman told me that the rent would be 570. It amazes me that she could lie to my face so blatantly. I requested my application fee and my reservation fee be refunded to me, and they begrudgingly complied, although I still am working on getting the application fee back. I now know that I should have gotten the rent quote in writing, and had the woman sign it.

I am currently filing complaints with the Better Business Bureau, Fairfax County Consumer Affairs, CAPREIT (their corporate headquarters), and the Landlord and Tenant Commission.

I fear that the management here is taking advantage of people who are less flexible than myself - if I had no other place to stay, I would have been stuck paying the higher rent. It would be hard to refuse to move in if I were moving from out of state and had a moving truck in the parking lot.

I know I was too trusting and naive, and that this is partially my fault. I just hope that this management doesn?t take advantage of anyone else, and I?m hoping to warn anyone else looking to rent here.
