Years at this apartment: 2006 - 2008
We've lived in the townhomes for 3 years and will be moving on this spring when MSC doesn't renew our lease due to renovations. I love our house and I think that the maintenance is good as long as you pester them to do something (we worked on the air conditioner replacement for 2 years- it was functional but flooding our living room). The community is great- lots of dogs and friendly couples/grad students. We even have a baby and that has worked out well- definitely not the typical resident but still fine.
They are now making you pay for all utilities- originally gas, water, sewer, and trash were covered in a $50/month utility fee. Now it is your own to deal with- heat is gas so it could be expensive (summer cost us an average of 60, we haven't gotten a winter bill yet). Electric normally is low (30-40) in the winter and high (80 ) in the summer.
Parking is generally ok, we have 2 cars and normally can find a street spot if no unnumbered spot is available
You can hear the neighbors if they are on the stairs or hanging pictures, but it is normally not every single sound.
Maintenance people are a mixed bag. They have a couple excellent ones and a lot of not so great ones. You may have to go through a few to get a good one.
washer and dryer are excellent. nice to have them on the same floor as the bedrooms in the 2 bedroom models.
downstairs half bathroom is kind of a joke. More like a large linen closet with a tiny toilet and sink.
older models have tiny drawers in the kitchen- can't put a silverware divider in them. Newer remodels have drawers but much less cabinet space.
fireplace is great- wood provided is not.
Location is wonderful- <1 mile to uva and about 1 mile to the downtown mall. Easy walking distance to both. This is one of the reasons we love living here.
Overall I'd recommend living here if you're a grad student/young married couple on a budget. It's an average apartment with large rooms and nice neighbors. It has it's faults, but it at least used to be pretty good for the money. I have no idea what they are charging for the remodels, but 1000/month for this place is pretty reasonable.
