Barracks West formerly Old Salem Apartments and Townhomes

I agree with the previous reviews. The staff is super. They are friendly and responsive, and this includes the maintenance folks. They take care of small and large problems very quickly and as well as they can. The problem is the ownership. The apartments and townhouses are tired and old, and the owners won't pay to improve or restore them. There's only one reason to live here: proximity to UVa and space. The townhouses are fairly large and some have nice balconies and patios. The apartments are grim, frankly, but if you live in a townhouse, you don't usually see them. Finally, some of the newer tenants are kind of trashy. Not dangerous, not bad, just loud and red neck-y. It's too bad because the property was once beautiful and it has a kind of "in the country" feel. The land is probably worth a great deal, since Old Salem is in the best part of Charlottesville. I imagine the owners are looking to sell for re-development. I'm moving soon. It's not worth the money.
