That's right. Imagine coming home on an otherwise pleasant evening, and there are police units all over the parking lot of your apartment complex.

Old Salem is a mixed batch; some of the buidings are nice-looking with nice people in them, others are not-so-nice-looking with not-so-nice people in them. There are several "daycares" around the complex, basically just women who watch other people's kids (and by "watch" I mean just that, they let them run all over the parking lots, barely even paying attention).

If you do decide to move in, definitely go for a townhouse and be CERTAIN your building is on top of a hill. When we first moved into Old Salem, they placed us in a townhouse at the bottom of a hill, and whenever it rained our living room would flood. This happened several times, and each time mgmt. dragged their feet responding to our complaints. They never made any real effort to solve the problem, just kept treating the symptoms. We finally had to demand a new apartment, this time on top of the hill. This new townhouse is much better, although there is obvious water damage in the ceiling above the dining room from where the upstairs plumbing has leaked. Luckily, we haven't had to have that much interaction with the staff or the maintenance crew since moving up the hill. Proves what the other reviews have said: it's a gamble.
