it's truly a gamble

Years at this apartment: 2004 - 2005
at first, i thought that this would be the perfect place to live. it was really close to work, UVA, and the shopping center, and the prices were reasonable. i was excited to move in. management put me in an apartment that they said was "newly refurbished". i was looking forward to it.
alas, when i actually moved in, i found the previous tenants' garbage still on my back patio (partially molded, by the way). there was a missing banister for the stairs, the latch on the door wasn't fixed properly, etc. maintenance came to fix it in a hurry, which was pleasant being that i had been there for less than a week. but then, other problems crept up. mainly, the fact that since i was at the bottom of TWO hills, and the landscaping was so piss poor for my unit, my patio flooded at the slightest of rainfall. this usually meant that the carpet in my living room also flooded, since the AC hose led in from the patio into my living room.
one morning i walked downstairs into about 2 inches of water covering the floor. this was unacceptible.
i was allowed to move into another apartment, but they did nothing to help me with moving. i virtually paid for everything myself, and did not get discounted rent for that month, which would've been a nice gesture, but the only gesture i guess they give is the middle finger salute.
the carpet in the old apartment should have been replaced, but instead, they took a "cleaning charge" out of my deposit for a carpet that for all practical purposes was... well, i can't say that word on here.
the new apartment has been better, except for the sketchy neighbors across from me that happens to undress every female that they see with their eyes. this is uncomfortable, since they have stared down both my ex girlfriend and my mother in this manner.
parking sucks. on to the next topic.
the maintanance is decent, but then it should be if you're paying to stay here. management is all about the money though, so don't expect any favors from them or for them to bend over backwards to give you a deal. in fact, i was extremely lucky to get the deal i got. extremely lucky. they remind me of it every month when they send the rent statement to my mailbox and try to charge me extra, and i subsequently have to march down to the office to get it straightened out, showing them that the rent amount on my lease is right and their rent statement is wrong.
mind you, that's happened like 8 times since i've lived here.
these apartments are spacious, yes. they're a deal, yes. but, all in all, for all the headaches that i've had living here, i probably should've lived at home and commuted an hour to work every morning. that way, at least, the only headaches induced would be self-inflicted.
