I've read a few nasty reviews about this place on here and I'm a bit shocked. Granted, I lived here for just under 2 years about 9 years ago, but I remember this to be a very nice complex. I used to live in Building 252 on the third floor, towards the pond (also overlooking the parking and mailboxes). It was a 900 sq ft, 1 bedroom, 1 bath apartment with vaulted ceilings and the trademark large balcony off the living room.
I know this is old, so perhaps it's irrelavent.
Back then, there were nothing but nice people on the staff (and a few pretty ladies, which didn't hurt). They used to try to put together community socials for the tenants and other parties. For the two birthdays I had while living there, I came home to birthday cards taped to my door (from the staff).
The apartment itself was awesome. I do remember having a few of those gross water-bug things, or whatever they are (with all those legs), but that was once in a while and realistically, no place is 100% insect proof, even if you live in Hawaii and have lots of geckos running around in your house (downside to that is that they poop). I never had a problem with parking, always right at the base of the steps. Heat and a/c worked great, just took a little longer to reach the desired temperature on account of the vaulted ceilings. The appliances weren't brand new, but they were well maintained. I'm sure those have been replaced long ago. There was plenty of storage space; large walk in closet in the bedroom, two other closets (hall and dining room area) and hook-ups for washer/dryer next to the kitchen (which I also used for storage space).
As far as maintenance issues, there was only one that I recall...kitchen faucet. Called for service, but kept fiddling with it and they came right over. It was fixed by the time they got there, but they insisted on checking it out to make sure it wouldn't happen again. I don't remember the pet policy, but I only saw small dogs and cats around, never anything big.
I had a neighbor below who had kids. One time they made some racket, but the guy came up to ask me if I could hear them. When I told him yes, but it wasn't that bad, he apologized and I never heard any noise again. They didn't live there for very long, though...I think only about 6 months.
Everything you'd need was within about 2 miles; Greenbrier Mall, hardware stores, Super Wal-Mart (24 hours), Applebees, Fazzoli's, Hooters, Long John Silvers, Burger King, Hardees, Shoneys, IHOP, a really awesome pizza place (Pizza Vera, I think), and a whole bunch of other restaurants and stores near Greenbrier Mall and off Volvo Parkway.
I enjoyed living at the Cedars. It was a very nice and very convenient place to live. Everyone who ever visted me also thought it was cool.
I know times change, and so do staffs and neighbors, but I hope the place hasn't changed as much as people seem to say...at least negatively, but I do know it's possible. A friend of mine lived in Virginia Beach at a place called Runaway Bay. One girl who used to work at the Cedars started working there in late '98 early '99 and I think she wasn't happy with the direction the bosses were going at the Cedars. She was suggesting I move to VB, but I ended up leaving the state altogether in 1999, so that was a non-issue. I wasn't really crazy about VB or that complex anyway. I told her my apartment was better (and cheaper)...she agreed, but she said that the people were better at Runaway Bay.

This review is a joke. Who cares what the place was like 9 years ago? If you're interested in renting an apartment at the Cedars NOW, not 9 years ago, stay away.
