Started out ok, went downhill by the end

This place started out pretty good. The office staff was always pretty bad, but there was one guy at the end who was very attentive and helpful. The apartment itself had a lot of maintenance issues and the washer and dryer unit was a problem. It couldn't even handle a couple pairs of pants without going crazy and sounding like it was about to jump through the floor and into the apartment below. The plumbing wasn't that great, but maintenance usually came by quickly and they ALWAYS resolved the problem, even if it did take awhile for a part. It's a pretty noisy place- you'll always hear your neighbors and everyone outside. I even heard the upstairs neighbor sneezing during allergy season.
A few big issues:
- lighting outside is spotty at best- never trust that the grounds are going to be lit. With that, always watch where you step. My stepdad broke his ankle falling into a hole in the middle of the sidewalk.
- bugs... of many large and strange varieties. Only saw a solitary roach once and I think he might have come in on a bag. Moderate ant problem, but easily resolved with ant bait. Then there are the large, seasonal guests... HUGE beetles and the largest wasps I've ever seen in my life. And they will find a way to get into your bedroom... even if you never open your bedroom window.
- the gym. At first everything worked well and it was just sweltering in the summer, but I could handle that. By the end, only two cardio machines worked and there was a nasty full-wall spray of dried projectile vomit covering the wall with the only working treadmill. And if you do venture down there, be prepared to do battle with at least three of four kindergarten aged non-English speaking children running amok with the weight machines.
- non-refundable pet deposit. I had a 10lbs cat and had to pay $500 and then $35 a month. It was ridiculous.
Overall, I'd say this was a decent place, though. The price is high and you're going to have to put up with a lot, but if you can make it look like your own inside and deal with a few problems, you'll enjoy it. I've lived in several apartments in Fairfax, and honestly, I'd probably rent from here again over some of the other places I've encountered.
