Pretty good

Years at this apartment: 2002 - 2004

My roommate and I have lived here for 2 1/2 years and we've enjoyed our stay. Some things about the community:

-The management seems cooperative, but be careful; we were quoted two different prices for our lease renewal, and initially they asked us to pay the higher one. But upon seeing the other quote, they gave us the lower of the two. And a few times a year they hand out bagged breakfasts (bagels and OJ) to all the residents leaving in the morning.

-It's right near the big Fair Lakes Center, which is nice for shopping, but a pain on the weekends when half of N. Virginia drives on over to shop.

-Conveniently near 66, which was the selling point for me when I moved to the area. I soon realized that although the map made it look like I was close to my job (near the Vienna metro), in fact, Rt. 66 is the ----- and my 7 mile commute would take a half hour. AT LEAST. If you're commuting east toward DC, it might be worth looking on the other side of Rt 50, where all the traffic backs up. This is pretty much the reason my fiance and I are looking at apartments off Rt. 29 closer to Fairfax City.

-The floorplans are nice. The rooms are spacious and closets ample. The appliances we have are old and outdated, though. And the washer/dryer is one of those stacked things that is supposedly 'full size'. But at least there is one in the unit.

-I've found maintenance to be nothing but prompt and courteous. They're always around the complex taking care of things, and very friendly. All of our issues have been handled within 24 hours. The grounds are kept VERY nicely too.

-The wall construction is very thick between apartments; we have yet to hear our next door neighbors.

-The apartment complex charges you for all utilities. Even trash (although it's hidden in the rent.) Our water/sewer bill runs about $20. a month, electric is $70. and gas is $60. Add on top of that phone, cable, high speed internet, etc, and it can get pretty expensive. It's definitely a good argument for an older complex that pays most utilities.

-Parking is always available, and if you live in certain buildings, you can always find a spot right in front. My roommate pays $25. a month for a covered parking spot as well.

-I don't know how the management handles moving-out procedures, but I anticipate it will be smooth.

Overall, I don't regret my decision to live here at all. I think the only thing that would've given me pause is knowing how bad traffic is in the area. All of North Virginia is bad, but trying to commute anywhere east in the mornings is the biggest headache.

Apologies for the review being so long; these are just things I'd want to know before considering moving into an apartment.
